Top 10 Afropop songs of the 2010s
The term ‘Afropop’ is broad but it stemmed from a cross polination of African contemporary genres with Western sound.
While the term doesn’t refer to a specific sound or style, its used as a general term for African popular music.
Nigerian Music Industry has produced some of the best Afropop songs in Africa and 2010s saw an evolution in Afropop with the rise of new artists who came in with a unique approach to music.

WIZKID – OJUELEGBA
Wizkid came to rise in 2010 after the success of his debut album, ‘Superstar’. But his fame would see more global recognization after he release his 2014 hit song, “Ojuelegba” off his Second self titled album, ‘Ayo’.
Teh song was produced by Legenduary beatz and was so successful that it was remixed by Drake and Skepta.

2. DAVIDO – FALL
Davido entrance into the music industry was with ‘Back When’ and ‘Dami Duro’. Things slowed down for him a bit until he released “Fall” in 2017. The topped charts and airwaves during its time of release.
The song was also part of his recent album, “A Good Time” and has earned certifications in the US, Canada and South Africa.
3. BURNA BOY – YE
Off his ‘Outside’ album, Burna Boy dropped ‘Ye’ in 2018, a song which will go on to create an important moment in his career.
The song was a street anthem when it dropped but gained massive success when Kanye West named his song ‘Ye’ also causing an increase in streams.

4. D’BANJ – OLIVER TWIST
D’banj has many hit songs to his credit but Oliver Twist takes the throne. The song gave the Koko Master his first appearance on the UK Single Charts.
The song was released in 2012 and produced by Don Jazzy. Kanye West, Pusha T, Big Sean, Mike Dean made a cameo on the music Video.

Released in 2016, ‘Soweto Baby’ is a collaboration bewteen Popular South African Music Producer, DJ Maphorisa, Wizkid and Dj Buckz.

‘Pana’ one of his best songs till date was released in 2016 and produced by Krizbeatz. It currently has the highest views on Youtube for Tekno’s songs.
7. TIWA SAVAGE – MA LO
Tiwa Savage is seen as the queen of Afro R’n’B for her generation. She delievers melodious songs with her soulful voice.
She released ‘Ma Lo’ in 2017 featuring Wizkid who helped carry the song with catchy hooks. The song was a smash hit.
8. YEMI ALADE – JOHNNY
Yemi Alade has been in the Music Industry for a while. from winning Peak Talent show to releasing songs that didn’t do too well on the market.
In 2013, her big break came through with the relase of ‘Johnny’ which receieved positive reviews and saw her leading the charts that year.
9. RUNTOWN – MAD OVER YOU
In 2016, Runtown released ‘Mad Over You’, in which he adopted the then trending Ghanaian signature sound synonymous with the sound template Mr Eazi had exported into his music.
