Ghanaian singer-songwriter Amaarae is preparing to make her most powerful statement yet with her forthcoming album BLACK STAR, a project she describes as both deeply personal and globally ambitious.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, the genre-fluid artist opened up about the vision behind the album and her desire to create something that resonates far beyond borders.

“My soul can’t rest until I feel like I’ve made a project that resonates in a really huge way globally,” Amaarae said. “The last frontier is to make both a commercial and critical success.”

Amaarae tells Rolling Stone she hopes to take over the world with her upcoming album ‘BLACK STAR’:

For Amaarae, BLACK STAR is more than a collection of tracks; it’s a deliberate exploration of identity, artistry, and heritage. The album’s title is layered with meaning: a reference to her persona, the emblem on Ghana’s national flag, and a nod to the Black cultural lineage that fuels her innovative take on dance music.

“It’s the genesis of me feeling sure and confident in myself as a grown woman, number one, and knowing exactly what my message is,” she explained. “I’m taking my culture and I’m synthesizing it in a way that feels fresh and unique… I wanted to take a genre that needs to go back home to its roots and merge that with my African roots and hip-hop and create a new world.”

Amaarae talks to Rolling Stone about her upcoming album ‘BLACK STAR’, which references herself and roots:

Pushing sonic boundaries is nothing new for Amaarae, but BLACK STAR promises to deepen that experimentation, blending electronic, Afropop, and hip-hop through an Afrocentric lens. It’s her effort to rewrite what global pop can sound like, without losing the authenticity of her origins.

The singer also touched on her kinship with American pop star Sabrina Carpenter, pointing to their shared expression of fierce femininity and creative freedom.

“She’s a freak just like me,” Amaarae said with a laugh. “Hers is bright and colorful; mine is dark and edgy. But we’re both saying the same thing: We’re sexual beings, and we are women who feel free and confident in that.”

With BLACK STAR, Amaarae is not just chasing global recognition, she’s redefining the musical and cultural dialogue around what it means to be a Black woman creating from Africa for the world.

As anticipation continues to build, one thing is clear: BLACK STAR is set to be a milestone in Amaarae’s artistic journey and a bold chapter for African alternative music on the global stage.

Amaarae to Rolling Stone on how she and Sabrina Carpenter relate:
