Thandiswa Mazwai frowns at Uganda’s anti-homosexuality law
Thandiswa Mazwai, a singer from South Africa, criticizes the anti-homosexuality bill that President Yoweri Museveni signed on Monday.
The penalty for having gay intercourse is life in jail, according to the legislation. Anyone who seeks to engage in same-sex relationships faces a maximum sentence of ten years in prison.
The law also mandates the execution of those found guilty of “aggravated homosexuality,” which is defined as having same-sex intercourse with minors or people with disabilities, doing so under duress, or doing so while someone is unconscious. “Attempted Aggravated Homosexuality” carries a maximum 14-year sentence.
The singer expressed her dissatisfaction on Instagram about how the Ugandan government limits her people’s freedom.
“When love is illegal. When love will get you killed. When politics enter your bedroom. Remember the immorality act that said black&white could not fall in love? It won’t stop with the gays. They will decide to control something you hold dear next time. Freedom is our birthright and so is the right to pursue happiness,” she wrote.
