Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag has acknowledged that he is presently unaware of how much money he will need to spend on signing this summer.

The Dutchman’s first season at Old Trafford saw the Red Devils make remarkable strides; they now appear certain to qualify for the Champions League again and may even finish the year with two titles.

In his first summer transfer window, Ten Hag signed Christian Eriksen on a free transfer from Brentford in addition to high-profile additions like Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia.

Wout Weghorst and Marcel Sabitzer joined the team on loans in January to give depth, but further additions are required if Man Utd is to once again really contend for the title.

Ten Hag was questioned about his future transfer budget at a news conference on Wednesday amid new claims that Man Utd might have £100m plus player sales to make in the summer – regardless of whether the Glazers own the club or not.

“I don’t have influence on that,” he said of the budget. “I don’t know.

“The only thing I know is that Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs, among maybe the two biggest clubs in the world from a fanbase perspective.

“So, I think this club has to compete for the highest in the world, so Champions League, Premier League.

“But in football you need funds to construct squads because the level from your players makes you successful or not.”
