Tems’ ‘Love Me Jeje’ tops Rolling Stone’s Top 40 Afropop Songs of 2024
Rolling Stone has unveiled its highly anticipated list of the Top 40 Afropop Songs of 2024, and Nigerian artists have made a significant mark. Leading the list is Tems with her hit track “Love Me Jeje,” followed by Rema’s “Ozeba” at number two.
Curator Mankaprr Conteh described “Love Me Jeje” as “sweet and sunny.” The track is a modern reimagining of Seyi Sodimu’s 1997 Nigerian hip-hop classic, with Tems infusing the song with her signature heartfelt lyrics and soaring vocals.
Rema’s electrifying “Ozeba,” celebrated for its trendy and dynamic beat, secured the second spot, cementing his reputation as one of Afropop’s standout stars.
Meanwhile, Ayra Starr also shined, with her track “Lagos Love Story” from the album ‘The Year I Turned 21′ clinching the number 8 position. The album showcases Ayra’s artistic evolution and has been widely praised for its depth.
Other Nigerian heavyweights dominated the chart, reflecting the global appeal of the Afropop genre.
– Asake, featuring Travis Scott, placed at number 11 with “Active.”
– Sarz’s “Happiness” (featuring Asake and Gunna) ranked at 14.
– Victony came in at number 15 with “Risk.”
– Kizz Daniel and Davido’s collaboration, “Twe Twe,” held strong at number 17.
– Asa’s “Odo” secured the number 22 spot.
Additional Nigerian entries include:
– Odunsi’s “Leather Park & Bnyx, RESURRECT” (24).
– Niniola with “Level” (25).
– Taves “Folake” (27).
– Tiwa Savage’s “Forgiveness” (28).
– BoyPee, Brown Joel, and Hyce’s “Ogechi” remix featuring Davido took the 31st spot.
– Wizkid rounded out the Nigerian entries with “Piece of My Heart,” featuring Brent Faiyaz, at number 36.
The prestigious list, curated by Mankaprr Conteh, Nelson C.J., Achille Tenkiang, Kui Mwai, and Madzadza Miya, celebrates Afropop’s vibrant diversity, focusing on its global impact, regional representation, and unique musical styles.
This accomplishment underscores the **global rise of Afrobeats** and Nigerian music, with 13 Nigerian artists making the list—a testament to the genre’s influence and Nigeria’s dominance in the global music scene.
