Tems describes her inspirational path from a working-class upbringing to music stardom.
Nigerian songstress Temilade Openiyi, better known as Tems, has sparked a social media frenzy with nostalgic glimpses into her past. As she prepares to unveil her debut studio album titled “Born in the Wild,” the rising star recently shared throwback photos depicting her former life as a regular working-class individual in Lagos, Nigeria.
Tems, celebrated for her breakout hit “Try Me,” stirred emotions online in response to a tweet on X on Thursday, May 23, 2024, urging individuals to share their experiences of leaving their jobs to pursue self-discovery. Touched by the sentiment, the songstress posted images from her days in an office setting, underscoring the significance of wholeheartedly trusting in God.
Reflecting on her journey, she emphasized the role of faith in her decision-making process, stating, “It only works if you trust God wholeheartedly. #BORNINTHEWILD.” This revelation sheds light on Tems’ transition from a digital marketer, a role she left behind upon realizing her passion for music. Instead of resigning herself to the frustrations of a conventional 9-to-5 job, Tems chose to pursue her true calling, guided by her unwavering faith.

In addition, Tems revealed that a “serious illness” forced her to delay the release of her debut album.
In a recent interview with the New York Times, Tems, who gained international fame in 2020 after featuring on Wizkid’s hit ‘Essence,’ disclosed that her debut album was initially scheduled for release in 2021. However, due to an unspecified illness that necessitated surgery and six months of recovery, the album had to be postponed.
During this period, Tems released her sophomore extended play, ‘If Orange Was a Place,’ instead. She explained that her battle to regain health partly inspired her new music, which she describes as embracing life as a warrior. This challenging experience has significantly shaped her artistic journey and the themes of resilience and strength in her upcoming work.
“Being a warrior is about not giving up,” she said. “Even if they cut your leg, you walk on your knees, you fight on your knees using what you have — and that’s good enough.”
