The Grammy-winning and Oscar-nominated Nigerian R&B artist, Tems, recently made an appearance on Hot 97’s Ebro, Peter Rosenberg, and Laura Stylez show.
During the interview, Tems discussed her unique creative process, explaining that she often freestyles and plays with beats until she crafts music deeply rooted in her emotions and feelings at the moment.
She also shared insights into her journey, highlighting her mother’s unwavering support. Despite obtaining a degree in economics, she had always aspired to pursue a career in music.
Tems revealed how music became her outlet for expressing her emotions, particularly since she didn’t have many close friends during her upbringing.
She disclosed her early dream of becoming a jazz singer and performing in bars. Despite her seemingly reserved nature, she emphasized her strong determination to follow her passion and develop her career.

Born Temilade Openiyi, she is a celebrated Nigerian singer and songwriter. She gained recognition with the release of her single “Try Me” in 2019, but her career skyrocketed after being featured on Wizkid’s 2020 hit “Essence,” which earned a Grammy Award nomination. In the same year, she collaborated with Drake on “Fountains.”
Throughout her career, Tems has accumulated numerous accolades, including Grammy Awards, NAACP Image Awards, BET Awards, and Soul Train Music Awards. She is also a talented songwriter and co-wrote “Lift Me Up” by Rihanna, which received Academy Award and Golden Globe Award nominations. Tems mentioned her favorite collaboration in her 2021 single “Found,” which she recorded with Brent Faiyaz.
