How I met Wizkid in 2019 – Tems discloses (Video)
In a recent online interview, Grammy Award-winning artist Temilade Openiyi, known professionally as Tems, opened up about her first encounter with Nigerian superstar Wizkid.
She explained that they first met in 2019, a time when she was still establishing herself in the music industry with only three songs to her name.
Tems recalled that she had just released her popular track “Try Me” in 2019, which received sponsorship for its music video from Jameson. The company came to Nigeria to promote the video, and during this visit, Tems was informed that Wizkid wanted to meet her.
In that same year, the two artists collaborated on the now-iconic track “Essence,” which was later released in 2020 as part of Wizkid’s ‘Made in Lagos‘ album.
Tems admitted she hadn’t initially set her sights high but was soon surprised by the song’s explosive popularity. As it gained international attention, major industry figures, including Beyoncé, reached out to her.
Reflecting on the experience, Tems shared how surreal it felt to be recognized by fans whenever she stepped outside, with “Essence” playing constantly in clubs and making waves worldwide.
“When I met Wizkid, I had only three 3 songs. I haven’t dropped my EP. We recorded Essence in 2019 & it dropped in 2020.”
