    Temilade Openiyi, better known by her stage name Tems, has flashed back on her modest upbringing before becoming famous and how she used to steal food when she was poor.

    She discussed her professional achievements in an interview with fashion and lifestyle magazine, GQ as well as the challenges she faced before becoming famous. Tems claimed that she used to be so poor that she would steal food.

    “There were times when I was not just broke – I was broke and hopeless. I used to steal food. I used to go to my aunty’s house just so she could give me food to take home.”

    According to Tems, the reason for her struggles was her responsibility to provide for her family and her difficulty in securing a good job.

    The “Crazy Tings” crooner told GQ that she knew she needed to change her mindset if she was going to defeat that person and not wallow in sadness.

    She chose to stop seeing herself as “this person that can never be anything” and to give music a real shot.

    In her words;

    “I didn’t have any self-esteem. I didn’t think I was pretty. I didn’t even think of my voice as anything. I just thought, There are so many people that can sing, I’m not a model, I don’t dance, but whatever chance I have, I’ll take it. Even if I end up singing under a bridge somewhere, I’ll be the best under-the-bridge singer ever.”

    “Imagine @temsbaby and I on track. Please, guys, whisper to her.”
