Tems appears on the Times 100 Next list.
Nigerian R&B superstar Temilade Openiyi, known professionally as Tems, has secured a place on the prestigious 2023 Times 100 Next List.
Tems, one of Nigeria’s foremost international superstars, has garnered widespread acclaim for her music, earning recognition and admiration from some of the world’s most prominent artists.
In a remarkable achievement, the R&B sensation has been included in the Times 100 Next list, which celebrates 100 young individuals from across the globe who are achieving remarkable feats and shaping the future in fields such as health, climate, business, sports, the arts, and more.
Among the notable figures featured on the 2023 list, Tems shares the spotlight with American music producer Metro Booming and emerging rap sensation Ice Spice.
Additionally, the roster includes other prominent names such as Kali Uchis, Hailey Bieber, and Peso Pluma, among others.
Tems has achieved remarkable success since her breakthrough onto the international stage, catapulted by her outstanding contribution to Wizkid’s chart-topping hit, ‘Essence.’
Notably, Tems made history as the first Nigerian female singer to clinch a Grammy Award. In 2023, she secured the Grammy Award for Best Melodic Rap Performance, thanks to her exceptional contributions to Future’s track, ‘Wait For U.’
Furthermore, Tems became the first Nigerian artist to debut at the pinnacle of the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Her accolades extend to three BET Awards, and she garnered an Oscar nomination for her songwriting contributions to Rihanna’s ‘Lift Me UP.‘
As part of Tems‘ appearance on the list, American Grammy winner and Oscar nominee Mary J Blige penned a glowing profile in which she describes the Nigerian singer as unique and original.
“Tems is in a class all by herself because no other artist sounds like her. That voice is so unique and original, so much so that it reminds me of the first time I heard Nina Simone. They both sing with emotion and conviction, making you feel every word they sing. When Tems and I finally had a chance to meet last year at the Grammy Awards, we just exploded on each other, giving each other so much love. I know she will make it far because she’s a talented writer, singer, and producer—my only hope for her is that she becomes one of the biggest artists of her time. Talent is one thing, but how you treat people and treat yourself in this industry brings longevity, and I believe she will be around for a while because she’s a beautiful human being inside and out.”
Tems is eagerly preparing for the launch of her debut album, an eagerly anticipated release that both fans and critics believe will propel the singer to new heights of success.
