Tems releases new single, Not An Angel
- Artiste Name: Tems
- Song Title: Not An Angel
- Genre: Afropop
- Country: Nigeria
- Year: 2023
Afrobeats singer, Tems, has released her second single for the year ‘Not an Angel’ that follows ‘Me & U’ which was released in October.
The song holds a very emotional and intricate message about toxicity, including the challenges of pouring your all into an unrequited relationship, especially when your partner still has their eyes lurking outside for the next shark.
She goes further to personalize the situation and give an insight into how one should prioritize themselves and move on from such emotional uncertainty. You know, like Gen Zs would say, “You’re loved at home, so why settle for vibes and inshallah.”
A captivating line that affirms this is the beginning of the second verse, where she sings;
“I’ll cut my losses in peace/ I don’t need nothin’ else from you/ ’cause I’m not angel/ I know I did all I could do.”
The song further comes with a visualizer.
She plays with monochromatic visuals, which give an ethereal feel, and props that align with the choreographic expressions of her lyrics. At some point, her choreography gets slightly sensually heated in a few scenes, a new part of Tems we are privileged to see unbox before us.
Not an Angel has been met with praise and a few criticisms, which is typical for everybody’s work of art.
However, it won’t be a case of overreaching to say that it would take detaching one’s ears from the conventional sounds of Amapiano and Afrobeats to enjoy this R&B served in rich alte sounds and rhythm.
Produced by Sarz, this is a masterpiece
