‘Me and You’ is a conversation with God – Tems.
In a recent interview, Grammy Award winner Tems opened up about the significance of her first single in two years, titled ‘Me and You‘.
The acclaimed artist, Tems, had the honor of being a special guest on Remi Burgz’s BBC 1Xtra show. During the interview, she disclosed that her recent hit single held a profound meaning as it was essentially a conversation between herself and God.
Tems, whose real name is Temilade Openiyi, has maintained a hectic schedule since 2021. She made notable contributions to the musical score of ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’, co-wrote Rihanna’s ‘Lift Me Up’, and achieved the prestigious accolade of winning her first Grammy Award for her involvement in Future’s chart-topping single, ‘Wait For U’.
Tems released “Me & You” on October 5, 2023, but during her interview, she revealed that the song was actually recorded two years prior, saying, “I made this song two or three days after we shot the video for ‘Essence.’ So this song was actually created in 2021.”
She went on to explain that the song was a freestyle with heartfelt words. When she freestyles, she feels like she enters a different realm where she can express her soul, and while doing so, she felt like she was having a conversation with God in her mind.
In a remarkable display of creativity and autonomy, Tems directed and produced the music video for “Me & You” herself, stating, “I was like, why can’t I do it? Why can’t I produce? Why can’t I direct?” She also discussed her two-year hiatus, during which she toured in Australia.
Tems expressed her astonishment at the global dominance and widespread reception of Afrobeats, saying, “It was insane. I think it’s incredible that you can go to the other side of the world and see people playing Afrobeats.” This highlights the genre’s remarkable impact and the way it resonates with people worldwide.
