Tems reveals surprising truth behind her song ‘Higher’
Nigerian ace singer and songwriter Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has made a surprising revelation about her hit song “Higher.”
The songstress shared that the original version of the song, which is part of her 2020 project “For Broken Ears”, was written differently. “Higher” gained additional fame when American rapper Future interpolated it in his Billboard smash and Grammy-winning song “Wait for U,” featuring Drake, with Tems credited as a featured artist.
On Sunday, August 25, 2024, Tems took to her X page to reveal that part of the hook—specifically the most well-known line—was initially written as “I won’t wait for you” instead of the widely recognized “I will wait for you.”
The 29-year-old explained that she performed the song in a British accent, which led to the mix-up in lyrics.
Despite this, the global superstar, like everyone else, has embraced the altered lyrics as the official version.
Her tweets read:
Maybe now it’s time for me to confess that it was always “I won’t wait for you” but I sang it in a British accent 😩 so it came out as “wun” 😭
It’s officially “I will wait” now though
I just thought it was funny af 😭😭😭
