Tems makes history as the first Nigerian to receive the BMI Impact award
Temilade Openiyi, better known by her stage name Tems, became the first Nigerian to get the BMI Impact Award in London.
The vocalist was honoured for her innovative talent, creative thought, and influence on the direction of music.
To top it all off, BMI London praised Tems and said they were eager to see what her next success would be.
Meanwhile, Tems‘ fellow “Essence” crooner, Wizkid has added another achievement to his resume with his recent success at the 2022 BMI Awards in London.
The BMI Film & TV Awards are honours given yearly by Broadcast Music, Inc. to songwriters, composers, and music publishers in a variety of genres. The 2022 ceremony took place on Monday, October 3, at the Savoy Hotel in London.
Nigeria’s Wizkid was one of the night’s main attractions after his monster records “Essence,” featuring Nigerian award-winning songstress Tems, and its remix, featuring Canadian pop star Justin Bieber, were named to the “Most Played Songs Of The Year” list.

According to Tems, life was not easy for her and her mom as they passed through difficult times, one of which was when her mother was attacked by someone who broke into their house and held her at knifepoint.
And at a point in their tough life, she quit her job and took permission from her mother to venture into music which totally changed their lives.
