The rapper shared the details during a recent appearance on the Afropolitan Podcast, where he reflected on his time with his former record label, Tinny Entertainment.

According to YCee, the terms of his recording agreement and the label’s position on recouping its investment meant he never saw earnings from his streaming success.

He explained that his contract operated on a 70/30 revenue split, but the label maintained that it had not yet recovered the money it invested in his career, preventing any royalty payments from being made.

“The mega hits and 100 of millions of streams that I have had, I didn’t get any money off them. I was signed to Tiny Entertainment. I had a recording contract and it was a 70/30 split. It was a situation where I wasn’t been remited off the earning because at the time, my previous employer felt he hasn’t recouped what he invested,” YCee shared.

The rapper went on to describe the contrast between his public image and his financial reality at the time.

While his songs were dominating the charts, endorsement opportunities were pouring in, and he was travelling internationally, he said the income generated from his music did not reflect the level of success fans saw.

“At that time, the songs were going crazy, endorsements, and I was travelling the world, and it was looking good from the outside looking in, but it wasn’t making sense to me in other areas. So I didn’t make any money off my streams,” he added on how the relationship with his previous label didn’t work out.

Describing the experience as one of the toughest periods he has ever faced, the rapper said his recovery journey was far from straightforward, requiring continuous treatment, medication, and professional support over several years.

“In 2020, I got diagnosed with a mental health condition during the lockdown. I was in London for six months and was in-and-out of hospital for about three months.

“I had to return to Nigeria to continue treatment because of the type of Visa I was on. Coming back to Lagos and getting into the system of mental health in Nigeria, it was a very very long six years. I was on medication and had to be hospitalised several times and still dealing with therapies.

“It was up and down. Sometimes it is looking good and sometimes, it just gets really dark,” he noted.

Despite the challenges, YCee shared an encouraging update, revealing that he is now in a much more stable place after receiving the treatment and support he needed.

His candid account sheds light on the importance of seeking professional help and continuing care, while offering fans a deeper understanding of the circumstances that led to his temporary absence from the music scene.

Nigerian rapper, Ycee has responded to Wizkid’s controversial remark on rap music and his failure to apologize to the Nigerian rappers who felt insulted.

Big Wiz had stated his dislike for rap music and how he doesn’t listen to it, explaining that their lyricism sounds alike.

In reaction to this, Nigerian word smiths took to their social media pages to respond to Wizkid, many of whom assumed he was referring to them.

Shasha Damilola Alesh, better known by his stage name Dice Ailes, has disclosed that legendary rapper and singer Olamide used his money to finance a portion of the “Pim Pim” music video shoot.

Olamide made an appearance in Dice’s Pim Pim, which was released in 2020 at the height of the coronavirus epidemic.

The artist said that he was in Nigeria at the time while Olamide was abroad in a conversation with broadcaster Adesope Olajide.

Since neither of them was able to fly to the other’s location, Olamide used his own funds to film his portion of the song’s music video and delivered it to him.

He hailed the YBNL nation founder for what he did and said that he will always be grateful.
