On Saturday, April 11, Davido stepped onto the Gobi Stage for his first-ever Coachella performance, marking a major milestone in his global career.

Davido Debuts at Coachella 2026 as Wizkid and Tems Make Surprise Appearance

The set ran for about 45 minutes, from 7:50 to 8:35 p.m., and he wasted no time setting the tone, opening with Dami Duro and moving smoothly through a packed catalogue of hits.

Backed by a live band and energetic dancers, Davido delivered a performance that leaned heavily into nostalgia and crowd favorites, including If, Skelewu, and With You.

In one of the standout moments of the set, he brought out Adekunle Gold, with both artists performing a lively medley that featured High.

While Davido held it down on the Gobi Stage, another unexpected wave of excitement was building elsewhere on the festival grounds.

Later that same night, Wizkid and Tems appeared alongside Justin Bieber on the main stage, joining him for a surprise performance of the Essence remix. The moment caught the crowd off guard, especially when Bieber personally introduced Wizkid, triggering one of the loudest reactions of the weekend.

Neither Wizkid nor Tems had been listed on the official lineup, but their appearance quickly became one of the most replayed highlights of the festival.

Coachella 2026—its 25th edition—runs across two weekends from April 10–12 and April 17–19, with headliners including Sabrina Carpenter, Justin Bieber, and Karol G. Davido stood out as the only Nigerian-based act with a dedicated slot on the official lineup, representing Afrobeats on the billed roster.

The contrast between the scheduled performance and the surprise appearances didn’t go unnoticed. While Davido delivered a structured, headline-style set as an official act, Wizkid and Tems’ unannounced entrance with Bieber created a viral, spontaneous moment that dominated online conversation.

In the end, it became one of those festival nights where Afrobeats didn’t just show up—it took over, just in very different ways.

In a video posted online, Teni revealed that she woke up to dozens of missed calls from friends and family, all urging her to take precautions in light of the high-profile brawl involving DJ Tunez and Burna Boy. Many even suggested that she hire a security team like that of fellow Afrobeats star Kizz Daniel.

She, however, poked fun at the financial burden of such a move, joking about the costs of maintaining a team of bouncers.

“I woke up to 57 missed calls from my loved ones advising me to hire Kizz Daniel’s bouncer. Wetin happen? I just dey see gbas gbos everywhere, na him my loved ones dey tell me say me wey be afrobeats musician make I go collect bouncer o. Say if I know wetin good for myself make I go collect that type of Kizz Daniel bouncer. Abeg o. All those kind of Kizz Daniel bouncer, them dey chop like one cow for one week. If I come get like 7 of the bouncers, na 7 cow I go dey buy per week. Bouncer go come dey chop my money pass me because say Afrobeats don scatter. I wan go Nollywood but they dey f!ght for their too. Where I wan come go? Shay na football I wan start dey play? Everywhere don scatter, everywhere don burst like this…”

Teni’s comedic take highlights the chaos and tension within the industry, offering fans a lighthearted perspective amid one of the most talked-about feuds in Nigerian music circles.

Nigerian music superstar Wizkid has weighed in on the ongoing controversy surrounding the alleged altercation between DJ Tunez and Burna Boy, further fueling tensions with a series of pointed social media posts.

Wizkid Drops Subtle Shots Amid Ongoing Controversy

His reaction comes shortly after DJ Tunez shared his version of events, claiming he was attacked by multiple people linked to Burna Boy’s camp. As conversations around the incident gained momentum online, Wizkid took to X (formerly Twitter), appearing to mock Burna Boy over the situation.

In one of the posts that quickly went viral, he wrote:

“Pussy nigga jump a DJ with 10 man carry Diddy towel dey dance. I never see fool like this diddy babe for my life,”

The tweet seemed to reference claims that the confrontation involved several افراد, while also tapping into ongoing online jokes connecting Burna Boy to Diddy.

Not stopping there, Wizkid followed up with another post, sharing an image of Johnson’s baby oil—a move widely interpreted by fans as a subtle jab linked to the same narrative that has been trending in recent days.

The “baby oil” reference has been amplified by earlier remarks from Speed Darlington, which have since gained traction across social media.

Wizkid’s involvement has added a new layer to the unfolding drama, intensifying fan reactions and deepening the divide between the camps.

As of now, Burna Boy has not publicly responded to either DJ Tunez’s claims or Wizkid’s comments, leaving the situation open-ended as conversations continue to dominate online spaces.

Wizkid clinched the Best African Music Act award, standing out in a competitive category that included top Nigerian names like Davido, Rema, Shallipopi, Tiwa Savage, and Adekunle Gold.

Ayra Starr also had a standout night, taking home the Best International Act award ahead of global heavyweights like Cardi B, Gunna, and Kehlani—a major win that highlights her growing global influence.

In the media space, Niko Omilana secured the Best Media Personality award, beating out nominees such as Bemi Orojuogun, widely known as Bus Aunty, and DJ Remi Burgz.

Beyond the winners, Nigerian and Nigerian-descended talents were well represented across multiple categories. German-Nigerian artist Odeal earned nominations for both Best Male Act and Best R&B/Soul Act, while actors of Nigerian heritage—including Wunmi Mosaku, Damson Idris, Dayo Koleosho, and Cynthia Erivo—were recognised in the Best Performance in a TV Show/Film category.

The 2026 ceremony, notably the first to be hosted in Manchester, once again celebrated Black music and culture on a global scale, with Nigerian talent playing a central role in the night’s biggest moments.

The record brings together three powerful musical influences: Afrobeats, dancehall, and Latin pop, resulting in a sound that feels both dynamic and globally in tune. It’s the kind of collaboration that doesn’t just blend genres but connects cultures.

Driven by Rvssian’s energetic production, PONGO rides on a vibrant rhythm that sets the tone from the very first beat. Wizkid slides in with his signature calm, melodic delivery, effortlessly anchoring the track with the smooth style that has defined his global appeal.

Rauw Alejandro, on the other hand, introduces a Latin twist, layering the song with his distinct vocal flair and melodic bounce.

The mix of languages and styles creates a colorful, borderless vibe—one designed for international playlists, dance floors, and festival stages.

More than just a star-studded collaboration, PONGO reflects the growing synergy between African and Latin music scenes. In recent years, this cross-continental exchange has continued to shape global pop sounds, with artists increasingly experimenting beyond traditional boundaries.

For Wizkid, the release further cements his role as a key figure in taking Afrobeats to the world. Known for consistently bridging cultures through music, he once again proves his ability to adapt, collaborate, and create records that resonate far beyond Africa.

With its infectious rhythm and global lineup, PONGO already carries the feel of a potential anthem—one poised to light up charts, clubs, and airwaves across multiple regions.

Since 2020, Asake has firmly established himself as a force to be reckoned with in Nigeria’s music scene, dominating the list of most-streamed albums of all time in the country.

According to data from Nigeria’s leading music chart publication, TurnTable Charts, the singer’s debut and sophomore albums have emerged as the most-streamed records since digital music consumption skyrocketed.

Asake Tops Nigeria’s All-Time Most Streamed Albums Chart

At the very top sits Asake’s 2023 sophomore album ‘Work of Art,’ which has racked up a staggering 661.2M streams. Lauded by both fans and critics, the album continues to appear on the upper echelons of streaming charts, proving its enduring appeal. His debut, ‘Mr Money With The Vibe,‘ isn’t far behind, claiming the second spot with 634M streams, while his third album, ‘Lungu Boy‘, secures the sixth position with 387M streams.

This remarkable dominance underscores Asake’s emergence as an era-defining star, one whose music has reshaped Afrobeats’ soundscape while tipping the industry’s commercial balance in his favor. Spotify Nigeria’s recent data further validates this, naming him the most-streamed artist of all time on the platform since its Nigerian launch in 2021.

Asake first broke into the mainstream with his hit EP ‘Ololade Asake‘ in January 2022. With a vibrant blend of energetic rap flows and smooth Fuji-inflected melodies, alongside producer Magicsticks’ masterful use of log drums, he delivered hit singles that propelled him to superstar status.

With three albums in the top 10, Asake is clearly the king of Nigeria’s streaming era and one of the most defining figures in contemporary Nigerian pop music.

While Asake dominates with three entries in the top six, other Nigerian stars also make their mark. Burna Boy logs three albums, with two landing in the top 10: his 2022 hit-filled album ‘Love, Damini‘ at No. 4 (436.8M streams) and 2023’s ‘I Told Them’ at No. 9 (308M streams). His 2020 Grammy-winning album ‘Twice As Tall‘ rounds out his entries at No. 19 (235.3M streams).

Other multiple-entry artists include Davido, whose fourth album ‘Timeless‘ ranks fifth (428M streams), while his fifth album ‘5IVE‘ appears at No. 15 despite being released in 2025. Wizkid claims two spots with his sixth album ‘Morayo‘ at No. 10 (301.4M streams) and ‘Made In Lagos‘ at No. 13 (264.1M streams). Seyi Vibez also features twice: ‘Billion Dollar Baby‘ at No. 8 (331.1M streams) and ‘Thy Kingdom Come‘ at No. 17 (245M streams).

Nigerian music producer and influencer Samklef has stirred fresh conversation online after claiming ownership of several tracks from Wizkid’s debut album Superstar.

Taking to X, the producer alleged that the classic 2011 project was recorded in his studio and that he was never paid for the recording sessions at the time. According to him, the absence of a formal agreement during the production process leaves room for him to revisit the matter.

Samklef further disclosed that he is open to renegotiating the situation with Banky W, co-founder of Empire Mates Entertainment, the label that originally released the album.

“Thank God I never used my masters to collect any loan. I’m about to negotiate with Banky W since I didn’t sign any contract from the beginning. I hope the Wizkid Superstar masters were never sold,” he wrote.

He went on to make a stronger claim regarding the project’s ownership.

“I own six tracks from the masters because Banky didn’t pay for the studio sessions — and I also own the studio where all the songs were recorded.”

Despite the bold statements, it remains uncertain whether Samklef possesses any legally recognised rights to the tracks or if his position is based solely on the alleged unpaid studio work.

Released on June 12, 2011, Superstar by Wizkid is widely regarded as one of the most influential albums in modern Nigerian pop music. The project played a pivotal role in launching Wizkid’s global career and remains a landmark moment in the evolution of Afrobeats.

According to data released by ChartMasters, the Grammy-winning singer has amassed 13.18 million equivalent album sales worldwide, placing him at the summit among African acts on the platform’s comprehensive ranking.

ChartMasters explained that the figures are generated using its CSPC (Comprehensive Sales Plus Consumption) methodology.

The system aggregates performance across multiple formats — from physical album sales and digital downloads to streaming equivalents, singles sales, and album track consumption — with each format weighted to reflect its contribution to overall music consumption.

Wizkid’s 13.18 million total reportedly combines figures from his studio albums and other long-form releases such as compilations and single releases, along with streaming data accumulated across his catalog.

The achievement arrives at a time when the singer’s 2026 chart run remains strong. His recent collaboration with Asake, titled “Jogodo,” has dominated the Spotify Nigeria Daily Top Songs chart, spending an impressive 46 days at No. 1. The record also enjoyed a five-week reign atop the UK Official Afrobeats Chart and wrapped up February as the most-streamed Nigerian song of the year so far.

Momentum has also extended to their joint EP, REAL, which has crossed the 80 million streams mark on Spotify — further underlining Wizkid’s consistent digital pull.

Beyond recent releases, the Afrobeats star continues to rack up global streaming milestones. He was recently included on Billboard’s list of the 100 greatest pop songs of the streaming era, becoming one of only three African artists featured. In another landmark moment, Wizkid became the first African artist to surpass 10 billion streams on Spotify — a feat that speaks to sustained worldwide demand for his music.

For fans and industry watchers alike, the ChartMasters ranking feels less like a surprise and more like confirmation of what the numbers have been saying for years: Wizkid’s influence stretches far beyond borders, and his commercial impact continues to set the pace for African music globally.

Securing a spot in the top ten is no small feat, and the 2016 Afrobeats-infused collaboration “One Dance” earned its place. Drake, who had already experimented with Afrobeats via an unofficial remix of Wizkid’s “Ojuelegba,” broke fully into global pop with this track.

Blending Afrobeats and dancehall rhythms, “One Dance” not only gave Drake his first Billboard Hot 100 number one as a lead artist but also became the first song in Spotify history to reach one billion streams. Beyond the numbers, it proved that Afrobeats could anchor mainstream pop without losing its authenticity, opening doors for countless artists afterward.

Number 29: “Calm Down” – Rema

Rema’s “Calm Down” had already been making waves before Selena Gomez jumped on the remix, but the collaboration elevated the track into a global phenomenon. The remix fused Rema’s playful energy with Gomez’s polished confidence, producing a song that transcended borders. “Calm Down” became the most successful Afrobeats single in Billboard history and the first African artist-led track to hit one billion streams on Spotify.

The track redefined what a global remix could achieve, amplifying rather than diluting the original sound.

Number 50: “Water” – Tyla

Tyla’s “Water” represents another landmark moment, introducing the South African genre Amapiano to a worldwide audience. Known for its log drum and hypnotic grooves, the track retained the genre’s distinctiveness while making waves globally.

The song won the inaugural Grammy for Best African Music Performance and made Tyla the first South African solo artist to appear on the Billboard Hot 100 in 55 years. Its placement at number 50 signals that Amapiano has officially arrived on the international pop stage.

Spotify’s staff picks highlight that African artists are no longer novelties on global pop lists. Afrobeats and Amapiano now sit comfortably alongside the likes of Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, and The Weeknd, demonstrating that Africa’s sounds are reshaping the very landscape of contemporary pop music.

A five-year retrospective, covering Spotify’s footprint in Nigeria from its launch in early 2021 to 2026, reveals the artists who have not just delivered hits but become the soundtrack to everyday life across Africa’s most populous nation. From Afrobeats heavyweights to “street-pop” sensations, these musicians have dominated playlists and speakers alike.

The top five most-streamed artists on Spotify Nigeria are

Asake

Wizkid

Seyi Vibez

Burna Boy

Davido

The data highlights a clear evolution in how Nigerians consume music, with indigenous sounds, high-energy Afrobeats, and street anthems leading the way.

Over the last five years, the availability of Nigerian artists on major streaming platforms has surged by over 150%, while total listening hours in the country hit a staggering 1.4 billion in 2025 alone.

These “Big Five” artists have not only set the bar for success but also proved the enduring loyalty of Nigerian audiences. Whether delivering soul-stirring melodies or pulsating street tracks, they’ve helped define the soundtrack of a generation and continue to shape the country’s music narrative.

Sitting comfortably at the top is Asake with his 2023 smash hit, “Remember.” The track has now earned the title of the most-streamed song in Spotify Nigeria’s history, reinforcing Asake’s status as one of the country’s most dominant hitmakers.

The announcement comes at a time when Nigeria’s digital music consumption is booming. According to Spotify’s data, local streaming has surged by nearly 300 percent in the last two years alone, a clear sign that Nigerian listeners are fully locked into homegrown sounds.

And when it comes to dominance, Asake didn’t just take the crown; he practically owns the room. The street-pop star occupies four spots in the top ten, underlining his stronghold on the street-pop and Afro-fusion wave.

Trailing closely behind “Remember” at number two is “Dealer” by fast-rising act Ayo Maff, featuring Fireboy DML, a collaboration that blends fresh energy with established star power.

Afrobeats heavyweight Wizkid also makes a strong showing. His upbeat track “Kese (Dance)” ranks at number four, while his joint effort with Asake, “MMS,” secures the ninth spot.

Emerging talent is not left out either. Rising singer Fido claims two entries on the chart with “Awolowo” and “Joy is Coming,” signalling a growing appetite among listeners for emotionally rich, relatable records.

Other notable appearances include “With You” by Davido and Omah Lay, as well as “Doha” by Seyi Vibez.

Veteran Nigerian singer Innocent Idibia, famously known as 2Baba, has weighed in on one of Afrobeats’ most debated conversations, and his answer is already stirring reactions.

The African Queen hitmaker shared his thoughts during a recent appearance on The Mic On Podcast, hosted by Channels TV journalist Seun Okinbaloye. During the chat, Seun decided to put the music legend on the spot, asking him to choose the best among Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido.

Seun asked, “2Baba let me put you on the spot and you are generation ahead of these folks, Burna Boy, Wizkid and Davido, if you are to chose one of the music of these artistes which one will you choose?”

Caught in a tricky but familiar dilemma, 2Baba first acknowledged the consistency and excellence of all three stars, noting that he enjoys different songs from each of them. Still, after a bit of pressure, the veteran singer eventually made his pick.

“I have my favourite songs from all of them, but if I’m put on the spot, I think Burna is on top of the game right now, with all due respect to everybody.”

When Seun followed up by asking whether his decision was based on talent, artistry, or delivery, 2Baba took a step back to explain his perspective.

According to him, ranking artists purely by artistry is never straightforward, as every musician operates within their own unique sound and creative space. He also pointed out that music taste ultimately depends on the listener.

The singer was quick to clarify that his choice had nothing to do with money or commercial success. He admitted he had no insight into the artists’ earnings and wasn’t speaking from that angle at all. Instead, he said his opinion was shaped by general industry awareness and overall impact.

In his words:

“Artistry, like I said earlier, different people have different styles, so every artistes is a major in his field, so there is nothing like one signs better than the other, art is an individual one , each song is a different thing, if an artist does this painting now, the next one he will paint will be different, so that is how I see it, and different people will have different taste of what they want and like but I am going into a general aspect of this.

I don’t know their bank accounts, I don’t have any information about their personal successes, I can speak on that but from what I can measure from at least common sense and unserstanding of the music world, I think right now Burna Boy is on top of this chain not just in Nigeria, in Africa and in the world but everybody is fantastically well.”

While his comments may fuel fresh debates online, 2Baba’s message was clear: all three stars are thriving, but in his view, Burna Boy currently holds the edge on the global stage.
