Davido recently advised Americans against relocating to Nigeria due to the country’s economic challenges during a podcast interview. His comment sparked widespread reactions, with some accusing him of tarnishing the country’s image.

Reacting to the controversy, Ruggedman backed Davido, asserting that the singer’s observations reflect the reality faced by many Nigerians.

The rapper called on the government to focus on addressing the nation’s economic woes rather than condemning individuals who speak out.

Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) account, Ruggedman wrote: “Ok, Davido has said what he said. Moving forward, the government should fix Nigeria so nobody will say such again. All this barking all over the place is not fixing the nation. The hardship is too much.”

Ruggedman emphasized that criticizing Davido does nothing to alleviate the current economic hardship, urging leaders to prioritize solutions that improve the quality of life for citizens.

The veteran artist’s remarks have sparked further debate on social media, with many echoing his sentiments about the dire state of the Nigerian economy and the need for urgent reform.

Veteran Nigerian rapper and activist Ruggedman has joined the growing chorus of voices condemning the government’s response to the nationwide protests. Known for his outspoken nature, Ruggedman weighed in on the ongoing demonstrations, offering his perspective on the situation and potential solutions.

Taking to Twitter, Ruggedman expressed his outrage at the authorities’ handling of the protests. In a series of tweets, he questioned the government’s actions, asking, “How do you fight people who are fighting for you and then stand in the streets asking for money from the same people?”

He further criticized the government’s response to citizens’ grievances, stating, “How do you fight your own people because they complain of hunger?” Ruggedman emphasized the long-standing demands of Nigerians for good governance, highlighting the hashtag #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria. He questioned why it is too much to ask for responsible and effective leadership.

The ongoing protests have brought to the forefront the urgent need for reform and accountability in governance. Ruggedman’s contribution to the conversation underscores the importance of holding leaders responsible for their actions. As the situation unfolds, one thing is clear – the Nigerian people will no longer remain silent in the face of injustice.

In a recent episode of Pulse Fun Fact, the multi-award-winning artist was asked to choose his favorite genre among hip-hop, Afrobeats, and Amapiano.

Without hesitation, MI Abaga selected hip-hop as his favorite genre, placing Afrobeats in second place.

According to MI, hip-hop is the genre that has served as the foundation for many other musical styles. He referred to hip-hop as the deepest art form and described it as the love of his life, highlighting its significance in shaping his musical identity.

Hip-hop holds a significant place in the rich tapestry of Nigerian music history, boasting a cadre of top-class rappers who have left an indelible mark on the industry. Icons such as Eedris Abdulkareem, Ruggedman, Mode 9, M.I, Ice Prince, Naeto C, Dagrin, and Olamide have played pivotal roles in popularizing hip-hop within Nigeria.

In the realm of Afrobeats, hip-hop stands as one of the foundational genres, influencing the early sounds of groups like The Remedies, Trybesmen, and Plantashun Boiz. These pioneering acts drew inspiration from hip-hop elements, infusing them into their music and contributing to the development of Afrobeats as we know it today.

Furthermore, rap music has transcended geographical boundaries, becoming domesticated in various parts of the world. Its influence extends far beyond traditional hip-hop realms, feeding into and shaping a multitude of genres that borrow from its rhythmic and lyrical elements. This cross-pollination has resulted in the evolution of diverse musical styles, showcasing the universal appeal and enduring impact of hip-hop culture worldwide.

Nigerian rapper Ruggedman has made bold statements against some Nigerian Afrobeat stars, branding them as talentless.

In a candid interview with Chude Jideonwo, veteran rapper Ruggedman, voiced his opinion that many individuals lacking talent are using the Afrobeats label as a shield.

He stressed that when discussing Afrobeats, he perceives it as a facade employed by numerous untalented individuals. Ruggedman challenged the notion of “Afrobeats to the World,” suggesting that credit should be attributed to specific artists rather than the genre itself.

During the Interview, he said, “When you ask me what Afrobeats is, I would say Afrobeats is what a lot of talentless people hide behind. They said, ‘Afrobeats to the world.’ I said, ‘No. It’s some artists to the world.’ It’s not the Afrobeats [genre], it’s some artists”.

In addition, Ruggedman revealed that, despite facing criticism regarding his relevance as an artist, he takes comfort in the fact that those criticizing him are likely influenced by his work.

Furthermore, he addressed his relationship with 9ice, disclosing that he was the one who introduced singer 9ice to his ex-wife, Toni Payne. However, Ruggedman expressed surprise when he discovered that he wasn’t invited to their wedding. He recounted receiving a call from 9ice’s former wife on a particular Saturday, informing him that it was their wedding day and that 9ice had instructed her not to extend an invitation to him.

He disclosed that “I introduced 9ice to Toni Payne but 9ice didn’t invite me to his wedding with her. One Saturday morning, I woke up to a call from Toni Payne. She was like, ‘Ahn ahnn! I asked her why didn’t she tell me and she said she wanted to but 9ice said she shouldn’t tell me”.

Ruggedman, a veteran rapper, has disclosed that although he introduced musician 9ice to his ex-wife Toni Payne, the singer refused to invite him to their wedding.

He claimed that one fateful Saturday, 9ice’s ex-wife called to tell him that it was their wedding day and that her husband had told her not to invite him.

In an interview with well-known media figure Chude Jideonwo, the rapper revealed this.

He said, “I introduced 9ice to Toni Payne but 9ice didn’t invite me to his wedding with her.

“One Saturday morning, I woke up to a call from Toni Payne. She was like, ‘Ahn ahnn! Where are you now?’ I said, ‘Where am I what? I am at home.’ She said they were getting married that day. I asked her why didn’t she tell me and she said she wanted to but 9ice said she shouldn’t tell me.”

Ten years ago, 9ice and Toni Payne called it quits when the musician revealed that his wife had an extramarital affair with Ruggedman.

Ruggedman and 9ice exchanged diss tracks as a result of the controversy, and 9ice angrily refuted the accusations.

The musicians allegedly ended their feud later on.

These Nigerian songs dominated the airwaves in 2003 and 20 years later, still have a place in the hearts of fans who remember them.

In comparison to what it is now, the Nigerian music industry’s environment was very different in 2003. The reality of the situation was that American pop culture and music dominated at the time, with Nigerian entertainment taking a back seat.

Despite this, Nigerian artists continue to put a lot of effort into their songs.

The year 2003 was excellent in terms of sound diversity. Gospel, Hip-hop, and R&B were among the musical genres that Nigerian artists experimented with.

P-Square their debuts that year, but they would not see significant success until much later in their careers. Veteran artists like Tony Tetuila and Sunny Neji released notable hits as well.

It was also a good year for the female force, as Sasha, Nigeria’s first notable female rapper, released her breakthrough track ‘Emi le gan‘ on Da Trybe Records.

The majority-female band KUSH also released “Let us Live Together,” which was their biggest hit. With the release of “Eji Owuro,” Sola Allyson created one of Nigeria’s most well-known love songs. Love/Heartbreak was a theme that frequently appeared in the music that was being released at the time.

Here are the top Nigerian songs that are turning 20 in 2023.

He did, however, claim that 9ice recorded Gongo Aso with a different beat at first, but after sampling another song and using the beat on it, he called back the singer to record Gongo Aso again.

Watch him speak below:

Meanwhile, Mp3bullet.ng reported that ID Cabasa, has revealed why Grammy Award-winning singer Burna Boy is not the biggest artiste in Nigeria.

In an interview with Premium Times, the music star said every generation and season always has someone who is the arrowhead and it doesn’t necessarily mean that the person is the best among their peers.

He said,

“I can’t say Burna Boy is the biggest artiste in Nigeria. We have Davido, Wizkid, and Fireboy doing crazy numbers I. We have Ckay, who we should not disrespect, especially with his numbers. We have a whole lot of these guys doing crazy numbers out there.

Even by next year, we will be celebrating some other young artists. We didn’t mention Kizz Daniel, whose song is the biggest right now that everyone is buzzing with.”

Cabasa stated that the best of something is never in the past and that every season, someone emerges to lead the pack.

In his words,

“that doesn’t mean that person is the best we can always have. Before Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido, Olamide, and even before ID Cabassa came into the industry; there were people.

“It’s a journey. We would always have the best. Now, this is 2022. If you ask an 18-year-old guy, who is Pele? He would tell you he doesn’t know who Pele is. He would also tell you about Lionel Messi; Ronald is better than Pele.”

The early to mid 2000s were a good period for the Hip Hop community in Nigeria as a number of Nigerian rap songs came out and went mainstream.

Over the years, Nigerian hip-hop has gone through multiple periods with various actors and notable scenes.

Rap in Nigeria has advanced considerably. There have been songs that have changed the music industry, expanded its boundaries, and set new guidelines for rappers to follow. T

The music genre is more than just spitting out words after lines; it’s about recognizing the environment, identifying the needs of the audience, and meeting those needs.

The reason many rappers were such big hits back then was because of the energy they put into their songs.

The majority of them were anthems that people repeatedly sang and recited. Regrettably, the values that rap ought to promote have been losing ground in Nigeria.

The Nigerian music scene has been overshadowed by a growing love of Afrobeat and its many children sending rap into the background.

However, many millennials would remember some of these songs that at one point dominated the airwaves during the 2000s.

Cry – Mode 9 (2007)

Mode 9 is considered as the leading pioneer of hip-hop music in Nigeria after earning the prestigious Lyricist on the Roll award multiple times. Cry was one of the tracks that solidified his position on the A-list.

The song, which was taken from Mode 9‘s 2007 album E’ Pluribus Unum, features beautiful singing by Nnenna and powerful lyrics by Mode 9.

It gained widespread critical praise and topped charts across Africa, winning three Channel O music awards for hip-hop, among others. The hip-hop music culture in Nigeria still finds Mode 9′s Cry to be relevant many years later.

Released in 2005, from Ruggedman’s ‘Thy Album Come‘ project, Baraje was that song that was played in parties and clubs. Ruggedman was able to tell the truth even though the song was composed with upbeat music when he said:

“Get crazy when u hear this instrumental, and most definitely, my voice is fundamental. Na the essential ingredient wey dey make my people dem no want 2 see the end. I’m bad more than that…stay forever like culture. You better make a move cos I dey watch u like vulture.”

Too Much – DJ Jimmy Jatt ft Blaise, Sasha P, Bouqui, Kemistry (2007)

The fact that there aren’t many female rappers in the music industry motivated the legendary DJ Jimmy Jatt to record a song with some of the established female rappers at that time.

In light of social norms, this song promoted the authority of a woman in a field dominated by men. When it was released in 2007, the song served as a platform for female rap artists to showcase their skills and lyrical prowess.

No be God (2008) – Gino

In this song, Gino discusses his difficulties and his unwavering faith that one day, his Creator will intervene and save him from his plight. Those on the bottom rung of the social ladder might readily relate to the song since it is pure motivation.
