The departure of manager Jose Mourinho and his staff from AS Roma has been confirmed.

Roma finished as runners-up to Sevilla in the Europa League last season, losing the final on penalties. Mourinho took over the team before the 2021–2022 season and guided them to triumph in the Europa Conference League during his first campaign.

However, Roma has opted to part company with Mourinho following a miserable start to the 2023–24 season, which has placed them ninth in the Serie A league after 20 games. They confirmed his dismissal in a statement on Tuesday morning.

The statement read: “AS Roma announces that Jose Mourinho and his technical collaborators will leave the Club with immediate effect.

The outspoken Portuguese was given the opportunity to join a group in April that had been founded by former AC Milan player Zvonimir Boban and former referee Roberto Rosetti, with the mission of bringing about constructive change.

However, after receiving a four-match suspension for his foul-mouthed outburst directed at Premier League match official Antony Taylor following Roma’s penalty shootout loss to Sevilla in the Europa League final, Mourinho has sensationally resigned from his position.

Mourinho has said in a letter sent to UEFA, which was not addressed to president Aleksandar Ceferin: “Dear Mr. Boban, in thanking you for the invitation you extended to me to be a member of the UEFA Football Board, I regret to inform you that, effective immediately, I will be renouncing to my participation in this group. The conditions which I so strongly believed in when I joined are no longer standing and I felt the obligation to take this decision.
