The club’s medical team confirmed that Rodrygo suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) along with a tear to the lateral meniscus in his right knee, which is considered among the most serious injuries in football.

Such damage typically requires surgery followed by months of rehabilitation, with Real Madrid estimating a recovery window of 8–10 months, effectively ruling him out for the remainder of the 2025–26 season and at least the first half of the 2026–27 campaign.

Rodrygo has been a key figure in Real Madrid’s attacking rotation, contributing crucial goals, assists, and standout performances in big games.

His absence is a significant blow to the club, affecting tactical options that rely on speed, agility, and sharp changes in direction, all central to Madrid’s style of play.

The injury also raises concerns for the Brazil national football team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as the team may now have to plan without one of its brightest attacking talents, depending on the pace of his recovery.

Now, Rodrygo embarks on a challenging journey of physical rehabilitation and mental resilience. Fans in Madrid and Brazil alike will be eagerly anticipating his return, hoping to see him back stronger and ready to dazzle on football’s biggest stages.

Now, the real tension begins.

Real Madrid’s reward for edging past Benfica in the playoffs? A heavyweight, two-legged duel against Manchester City. It’s the latest chapter in what’s quickly becoming a modern European rivalry, and one pre-tournament favorite is guaranteed to exit early.

Defending champions Paris Saint-Germain will get a shot at redemption against Chelsea, months after the Blues outclassed them in the Club World Cup final. Expect intensity.

Meanwhile, Barcelona head to St James’ Park for a tricky test against Newcastle United, where the atmosphere alone could tilt the tie.

On another front, Liverpool square off with Galatasaray, while Arsenal, who topped the league phase with a flawless record, must overcome Bayer Leverkusen to keep their ambitious quadruple dream alive.

Bayern Munich, runners-up in the league phase and perennial contenders, face a dangerous Atalanta side that squeezed through thanks to a dramatic late penalty against Borussia Dortmund.

And don’t overlook Atletico Madrid vs. Tottenham Hotspur, a clash that promises tactical warfare.

Full Round of 16 Fixtures

Real Madrid vs. Manchester City

Bodø/Glimt vs. Sporting CP

SL Benfica will be without the Argentine forward for the second leg of their UEFA Champions League tie after UEFA imposed a provisional suspension. The measure comes amid an ongoing investigation into allegations that Prestianni directed racist abuse at Real Madrid star Vinícius Júnior during the first-leg match.

The suspension, which took effect last Friday, prevents Prestianni from participating while UEFA’s Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector reviews footage and evidence from the February 17 encounter at Estádio da Luz.

The Incident

The first-leg match ended 1–0 in favour of Real Madrid, but attention has shifted to a moment following Vinícius Júnior’s goal. Video footage shows Prestianni covering his mouth while speaking to the Brazilian international. Vinícius immediately reported the incident to referee François Letexier, alleging a racial slur. The game was briefly paused before resuming.

Investigation and Possible Penalties

Under Article 14 of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations, if found guilty, Prestianni could face:

Minimum Penalty: A 10-match suspension.

Extended Ban: A longer period of ineligibility that could rule him out for the rest of Benfica’s European campaign.

Club Consequences: Potential fines or stadium restrictions imposed on SL Benfica.

Conflicting Statements

The players and clubs remain divided over the exchange:

Gianluca Prestianni: Denies using any discriminatory language and expressed regret over the “negative attention and threats” his family has faced since the allegations surfaced.

Real Madrid: Fully supports Vinícius Júnior and has submitted what they call “supporting evidence” to UEFA, urging decisive action to protect players from abuse on the pitch.

The situation remains under review, with Benfica set to navigate a high-stakes second leg without one of their key attackers.

The Brazilian winger expressed outrage after the match, condemning alleged racial remarks directed at him during the heated fixture. The flashpoint reportedly came when Vinícius alerted the referee to comments he claimed were made by Benfica youngster Gianluca Prestianni.

The situation escalated quickly, prompting officials to temporarily pause the game in line with UEFA’s anti-racism protocol, a move that immediately drew attention across the football world.

However, it was Vinícius’ post-match reaction that truly amplified the issue. Taking to social media, the forward detailed his frustration, insisting that incidents like this have become an unfortunate pattern in his career.

He said:

“Racists are, above all, cowards. They need to put their shirts in their mouths to show how weak they are. But they have the protection of others who, theoretically, have an obligation to punish them. Nothing that happened today is new in my life or in my team’s life. I received a yellow card for celebrating a goal. I still don’t understand why. On the other hand, it was just a poorly executed protocol that served no purpose. I don’t like to appear in situations like this, especially after a big win and when the headlines should be about Real Madrid, but it’s necessary.”

The 25-year-old also questioned the effectiveness of the anti-racism measures deployed during the match, describing the protocol as poorly handled.

For Vinícius and Real Madrid, attention now turns to UEFA, with many expecting the governing body to thoroughly investigate the allegations and take firm action if wrongdoing is established.

Once again, what should have been a night focused solely on football has been overshadowed by the persistent shadow of racism, a battle the Brazilian star continues to confront both on and off the pitch.

Former Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso has finally spoken out following his unexpected dismissal, describing the decision as “painful but part of football” while reflecting with pride on his brief spell at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Xabi Alonso Breaks Silence After His Real Madrid Exit

Alonso’s exit came just eight months after his appointment, bringing a sudden end to what many expected to be a long-term project.

Breaking his silence shortly after the club confirmed his departure, the former midfielder released a short but emotional statement on his official Instagram page, thanking the club hierarchy, players, and supporters for their backing.

Despite the abrupt ending, Alonso insisted he walked away with dignity and pride, stressing that he gave everything during his time in charge.

He said:

“This professional stage is over, and it didn’t go as we would have liked. Coaching Real Madrid has been an honor and a responsibility. I thank the club, the players and above all the fans and Madrid fans for their trust and support. I leave with respect, gratitude, and pride that I did my best.”

The 44-year-old admitted that the outcome fell short of expectations but accepted responsibility for the team’s performances, acknowledging that such decisions are part of life at a club with Real Madrid’s standards.

“When results don’t meet the club’s standards, these decisions happen,” Alonso noted, while also reserving praise for his squad, highlighting their professionalism and commitment during what he described as a challenging period.

He further reflected on the weight that comes with managing the Spanish giants, describing the role as both an honour and a huge responsibility he will always cherish.

Real Madrid have since moved quickly to fill the vacancy, announcing Álvaro Arbeloa as Alonso’s replacement. Like his predecessor, Arbeloa is a former Madrid player and now steps into the role tasked with steadying the club after a turbulent spell.

While Alonso’s reign ended far sooner than anticipated, his message struck a tone of gratitude rather than bitterness — closing the chapter with his head held high as Real Madrid turn the page to a new era.

The announcement began to gather momentum earlier in the week when, on January 12, the Grammy-winning superstar took to his social media pages to unveil a 45-second cinematic teaser of the track.

The clip marked the official reveal of “For Everybody” as Burna Boy’s first single of the year, while also confirming his new role as a Sporty Group ambassador, a partnership aimed at merging music, sport, and African culture on a global scale.

The teaser video immediately caught attention for its ambitious scope. Shot with a slick, cinematic feel, it features elite football stars from top European clubs, including Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao.

Global football names such as Eduardo Camavinga, Éder Militão, Nico Williams, and Iñaki Williams make appearances, placing African pop culture and elite sport side by side under the campaign banner #SportyForEverybody. The rollout also cleverly aligns with the buzz surrounding the Africa Cup of Nations final, adding continental significance to the release.

Speaking through the project’s messaging, Burna Boy described For Everybody as a celebration of owning culture and telling African stories on a global stage, a theme that has remained central to his artistry over the years.

The timing of the release further heightens anticipation, coming amid his ongoing world tour and sustained excitement from fans across continents.

Musically, For Everybody leans into Burna Boy’s familiar message of unity, shared experience, and global connection, reinforcing his reputation as an artist whose sound transcends borders. Beyond the music itself, the collaboration highlights the growing intersection between Afrobeats and football culture, two forces that continue to shape youth identity and influence worldwide.

With a star-studded visual rollout, international appeal, and a bold cultural statement at its core, For Everybody is already being framed as more than just a single.

As release day approaches, all signs point to Burna Boy delivering not just a song, but a moment — one designed to resonate far beyond the charts.

Real Madrid have confirmed the departure of Xabi Alonso as first-team head coach, bringing an end to his short and challenging reign at the Santiago Bernabéu after just 232 days in charge.

Xabi Alonso leaves Real Madrid after brief spell as Arbeloa steps in

The decision, which was reached by mutual agreement, comes at a delicate moment for the Spanish giants. Alonso’s exit follows closely on the heels of Madrid’s painful 3–2 defeat to Barcelona in the Supercopa de España final in Saudi Arabia, a result that further intensified pressure on the former midfielder.

Alonso, a revered figure at the club from his playing days, returned to Madrid on May 25, 2025, riding high after an impressive managerial spell with Bayer Leverkusen in Germany. Expectations were sky-high, but results failed to match the optimism.

After 19 La Liga games, Los Blancos are currently four points behind leaders and archrivals Barcelona, a gap the hierarchy seemingly felt was unacceptable.

On Monday, January 12, Real Madrid made the announcement official in a club statement.

“Real Madrid CF announces that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to end his time as first team coach,” the statement read.

Despite the disappointing spell, the club was keen to underline Alonso’s legendary status and enduring connection with Madrid.

“Xabi Alonso will always have the affection and admiration of all Madrid fans because he is a Real Madrid legend and has always represented the values of our club. Real Madrid will always be his home.

“Our club thanks Xabi Alonso and his entire technical team for their work and dedication during this time and wishes them the best of luck in this new stage of their lives.”

In the same announcement, Real Madrid confirmed that Álvaro Arbeloa has been appointed as the new head coach of the first team. Like Alonso, Arbeloa is a former Madrid player and understands the club’s culture deeply.

The former Spain international has been in charge of Real Madrid Castilla, the club’s reserve side, since June 2025, having previously spent around five years coaching within the youth academy.

Arbeloa now steps into one of football’s most demanding jobs, tasked with steadying the ship and reigniting Madrid’s title charge as the season enters a critical phase. For Alonso, meanwhile, the chapter closes quickly in the dugout but his bond with the club, as Madrid made clear, remains unbroken.

Real Madrid star Vinícius Júnior has broken his silence following his emotional outburst during the recent El Clásico showdown against Barcelona, offering a heartfelt apology to fans, teammates, and the club.

Vinícius Júnior releases statement following El Clásico outburst

Taking to social media, the Brazilian forward shared an official statement reflecting on his behavior after being substituted in the high-intensity clash. Known for wearing his heart on his sleeve, Vinícius admitted that his reaction came from a place of passion and an overwhelming desire to win.

“Today I want to apologize to all the Madridistas for my reaction when I was substituted in the Clásico,” he began. “Just as I have already done in person during today’s training, I also want to apologize again to my teammates, the club, and the president. Sometimes passion gets the better of me because I always want to win and help my team. My competitive character stems from the love I feel for this club and everything it represents.”

He rounded off his message with a promise that struck a chord with Madrid fans:

“I promise to keep fighting every second for the good of Real Madrid, as I have done since the first day.”

The apology has been widely received with understanding and respect. Supporters flooded the comments with words of encouragement, applauding the young star for his maturity and humility in owning up to his actions.

Vinícius’ competitive spirit and deep emotional connection to the game have always been part of what makes him such a standout player for Real Madrid.

And while the Clásico may have stirred his emotions, his quick move to make amends has only strengthened his bond with the fans a reminder that even passion, when tempered with accountability, is a sign of true leadership.

The 22-year-old saw off competition from Arsenal’s Declan Rice and Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane to clinch the honour, becoming only the second player to win the award while plying his trade outside England.

The first to do so was Owen Hargreaves, who earned the accolade back in 2006 during his time with Bayern.

Bellingham’s influence on the international stage has continued to grow, with last season proving a defining one for the youngster. He featured in eight matches, playing a central role in England’s UEFA Nations League promotion under interim coach Lee Carsley last autumn, before carrying his form into the FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifiers under new boss Thomas Tuchel earlier this year.

The midfielder delivered when it mattered most: scoring in England’s 3-1 win over Greece at Wembley in October, producing a man-of-the-match display in the 5-0 demolition of the Republic of Ireland in November, and laying on a delightful assist for Myles Lewis-Skelly’s debut goal against Albania in March. He also created two more goals in the reverse fixture against Ireland.

Now widely regarded as the heartbeat of the Three Lions midfield, Bellingham’s creativity, drive, and composure continue to set him apart. For England fans, this award is not just recognition of a remarkable season, but also a glimpse of what could lie ahead as the 2026 World Cup edges closer.
