Peter Nwachukwu, the husband of late gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu, has been sentenced to death by hanging for the culpable homicide that led to her tragic death.

The ruling was made on Monday, April 28, 2025, by Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja.

Nwachukwu was found guilty of causing the death of Osinachi on April 8, 2022, through a prolonged pattern of abuse. The court determined that the prosecution had successfully met the burden of proof, convicting him on charges of culpable homicide, spousal battery, and cruelty to children.

The trial began in June 2022, with Nwachukwu facing 23 charges, and 17 witnesses were called to testify, including two of Osinachi’s children.

The prosecution also presented 25 exhibits. In his defense, Nwachukwu called four witnesses and presented four exhibits. His defense lawyer, Reginald Nwali, pleaded for leniency, but the prosecution counsel, Mrs. Aderonke Imala, called for the maximum penalty.

In addition to the death sentence, Nwachukwu received several prison terms, including two years for multiple offenses, fines of N500,000 and N200,000 for specific charges, and sentences ranging from six months to three years for additional charges.

This sentencing concludes a high-profile case that has spotlighted domestic violence and the pursuit of justice in Nigeria, especially following the untimely death of Osinachi, a beloved gospel artist.

Osinachi Nwachukwu

Osinachi Nwachukwu, most known for her vocals on songs such as “Ekwueme,” “The Cry,” “God of Power (Ikem),” and others, died earlier this year, and her death was one of the most talked about in the country.

On April 8, 2022, the singer passed away at the age of 42. It was stated at the time of her death that she passed away after battling an unspecified illness. Her husband soon after claimed that lung cancer was the cause of death.

Then Osinachi’s elder sister Favour Made came out to say:

She did not die of cancer. The husband, Mr Peter Nwachukwu hit her with his leg on the chest. All these while, he had been beating her but my sister hid all that she was passing through from us. Before now, we told her to come out of the marriage, we told her that they are not divorcing, that it’s just separation. But she felt that God is against divorce. We told her that separation is not a sin but just for her to stay alive and take care of her children. She will always tell us to relax that the man will change.

So, when the man kicked her on the chest, she fell down and he took her to the hospital but he did not even tell us. It was her friend who lives in Ebonyi state that called her twin sister, because Osinachi has a twin sister, to ask, ‘did your sister tell you that Peter hit her on the chest? the sister then told her no. It was the hitting on the chest that killed her.

Her husband, Peter Nwachukwu, denies the accusation saying:

Let me tell the whole world, I have suffered a lot. I have been abandoned. What killed my wife was cancer of the lungs; I didn’t hit my wife. Cancer of the lungs killed my wife, Osinachi Nwachukwu, so I’m suffering for what I do not know

Osinachi Nwachukwu is survived by 4 children.

Chinedu Nwadike

The second and youngest person on the list today is Chinedu Nwadike. The gifted vocalist, who wrote songs like “Chi Anyi Di” and “Jesus Kwue Okwu,” tragically passed away on June 3, 2022, at the age of 39.

He died after a lengthy fight with chronic renal illness, and his wife and three children survive him.

Sammie Okposo

Sammie Okposo was the man behind gospel classics including “Welu Welu,” “Naija Praise,” “Na Only You I Know,” “Jehovah Idi Ebube,” and many more. Many of his songs continue to this day to be a staple of praise and worship services in most churches across the nation.

It was announced on November 25, 2022, that legendary musician Sammie Okposo had died a few days after being brought to a hospital for treatment of an undisclosed illness. The singer passed away at the age of 51, leaving behind his wife, Ozioma Okposo, and his children.

Congratulations are flooding in for the late Osinachi’s twin sister as she secures a lucrative management deal.

Able Cee Studio has signed Amarachi Eze, the twin brother of late gospel performer Osinachi Nwachukwu.

Able Cee, a producer and gospel musician, officially announced on his Facebook page that the studio would be exploring Eze’s musical abilities.

Sharing photos, He wrote,

Foundation

The Osinachi Nwachukwu Foundation was established to keep the legacy.

The foundation certificate was presented to the family by Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, a member of the House of Representatives for Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency of Abia State.

Ms Onyejeocha also represented the Minister for Women Affairs and Social Development, Pauline Tallen, at the burial.

The foundation is designed to support young people, especially women, in entrepreneurship skills.

Burial rites

The majority of the burial rites were carried out in Abuja.

Before the final internment, a night of worship was held in Abuja on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government filed 23-count charges against Peter Nwachukwu over the death of his wife who died on the 8th of April, 22022 after he allegedly assaulted her.

He was charged under sections 104 and 379 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, by the Attorney-General of the Federation.

The defendant was charged with culpable homicide contrary to section 221 of the Penal Code which is punishable with death.

The case with charge number, CR/199/2022, was filed at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, on May 20, 2022, by the Head, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, Department of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Ministry of Justice, Mrs. Yewande Gbola-Awopetun.

Tuesday saw the beginning of the funeral rites for the late gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu.

Osinachi died on April 8, 2022, after her children, family, and colleagues alleged she was beaten to death.

Peter Nwachukwu, the late Ekwueme crooner’s husband, was accused of brutalising her to death.

Nwachukwu was detained by the police after the accusations were made against him, and he was charged with allegedly breaking Sections 104 and 379 of the 2015 Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), Section 221 of the Penal Code, and the 2015 Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act (VAPP).

Amid the allegations, Nwachukwu had denied brutalizing Osinachi to death, stressing that she died of lung cancer.

Despite his denial, the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, High Court had remanded Nwachukwu in Kuje Correctional Facility.

However, the burial rites sighted by Mp3bullet.ng show that today (Tuesday) is the praise night at Michael Okpara Square in Enugu by 7pm.

A prayer night will be held in memory of the singer on the 24th of June, at the Amakpoko Umauka Central School Isochi Umunochi, Abia State.

The lying in state would be held on the 25th of June, 2022.

Popular Nigerian gospel musician Nathaniel Bassey has advised couples to pray and check again before they enter into marriage relationships.

The gospel singer made this statement following the circumstances surrounding the death of his colleague, Osinachi who died Friday last week in the hospital after suffering domestic violence from her husband.

The talented singer while reacting to the death of Singer, Osinachi Nwachukwu said although marriage is good, it is not by force.

He further prayed that God will give those in abusive marriages the grace to take the right decision.

He wrote on Instagram:

Dr. Paul Enenche, the senior pastor of Dunamis International, revealed what he and the church knew about the death of outstanding gospel musician Osinachi Nwachukwu.

Recall, that the singer died on Friday at an Abuja hospital.

Until her death, Osinachi Nwachukwu was a lead singer at the Dunamis International Gospel Centre.

She was alleged to have died from health complications and suffered from domestic violence.

The senior pastor of Dunamis International, Dr. Paul Enenche, took to his social media platform in a lengthy video to reveal what the church and he knew about the case of their late gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu.

Dr Paul Enenche on the date of Late Osinachi Nwachukwu said:

WHAT I KNOW ABOUT PASSING OF MRS. OSINACHI NWACHUKWUWe bring you greetings in Jesus’ Name.We are in a season that calls for sober reflection in the light of the passing of our beloved sister, Osinachi Nwanchukwu who is a kingdom and generation asset to this generation. In the light of so much misinformation and misconstruction of events, I decided to set straight what I know concerning the situation.

Over two and half Months to Three Months ago, she came to see me with her husband with complainants of chest pain, respiratory distress. I prayed for her and prayed and prayed again. And when the symptoms did not abate, I counseled that they go to the hospital to help us to know exactly what we were dealing with. They asked if I could help them assist facilitate that process. I called our head of medical team, Dr Osang who is consultant pediatrician with the Federal Medical Centre, Keffi to assist handle their situation. And he called the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, he called colleagues there where they attended to them.On seeing her, ordered some investigations after examinations and that included CT Scan (Computed Tomography Scan).

That was done, and from what the Doctor saw, they said there was need for further investigations either at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital or the National Hospital in Abuja. I called the Doctor, consultant, A pulmonologist Respiratory Physician at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Dr Akor Alexander, I told him the situation and he asked they come to see him immediately. And they went to the Gwagwalada Teaching Hospital. After they have examined her there and saw the situation, they felt there was a need for histology and biopsy of the Lung Tissue and they asked she goes to the National Hospital to get that done.I again called Dr Jubrin who is the head of pathology and consultant, histopathologist of the National Hospital in Abuja and reported the issue to him and to help us go ahead with the investigation and find out what exactly happened.

I am calling names and calling places because the people are available and alive and they are all verifiable. And then, they continued the management. The histology was done from what I saw at that time. The picture was much milder than what the CT Scan earlier on showed and so we felt very happy that atleast, there was relief. She called me literally daily and prayed with her. She reported progress.A point came where she needed no oxygen anymore according to what she said to me one night. And that they checked her oxygen perfusion and it was 100% and we were very very excited at that progress. That was the point it was before we went over to the Crusade in Cameroon. It was in Cameroon the second night that I got to know of the unfortunate incidence of her passing.Now, if there was domestic violence that lead to or coincided with those symptoms that she came with two and half month to three months ago, there is no way I would know and if there had been perennial domestic violence, there was no way I would have known.

The things we are hearing after her passing were things that were very very strange to my hearing. Then I began to ask questions.First, I asked the twin sister, are you are aware that your sister passed through all these things. She said yes that she knew some of them. That the majority of them she was hearing from those she confided in. I asked her, I said if you knew, why didn’t you let us know? And the twin sister said, she always begged her, please don’t let the Church know, don’t tell the pastor, please the man will change, just pray for us. That the man will change. And that continued to happen.I asked the first son yesterday, I said was this real? And the son told other stories.And I said so, why didn’t you tell me because typically they will run to me after service and I will pray for them. Lay hands on them. I said, why didn’t you tell about what was going on in the home? And the young man said, they couldn’t tell me because the father would always asked them after they left me and said, what did you tell the pastor? Did you tell him anything? And so on and so forth.Other members in the Choir who were privy to these some of the things that were going on. I asked one of them when we paid a visit to the house of the deceased yesterday.

What happened, why were we not aware of all these things? The same story that she could always go on her knees and asked them please, don’t don’t, just pray, don’t, we are trusting God for him to change.The last one that touched me so much was the music producer, who came to see me in the office two days ago to tell me his own experience how he witnessed that the man slapped the wife in his music studio. And I said to him, you saw a man slapped a woman in your presence and you left the man alone and you are a man yourself.And he said before he could respond to the man, the woman again in tears on her knees begged him not to do anything. To leave him alone. And not to do anything at all. And so on and so forth. So, we have had these stories and these are all the things we got to know after she had passed.As a person and as a Church, everyone who knows us knows that we have zero degree tolerance for domestic abuse and wife battering of any sort.

If you ever listen to any of our relationship messages, there is a principle, policy and a rule we have and that is; it is better to be alive without a marriage than to die because of marriage. We’ve said that over and over. I am sure that some of us might have listened to the clips of those messages.Now this kind of time is the time where people heap all manner of blames on the Church and that is typical because whatever goes wrong, the first point of call is the Church. I have seen people asked questions, why should a wife abuser be a member of the Church or how can somebody be so brutal and he is a member of the Church? That is not a question that people who know Scriptures should ask. You know the Ark of Noah, the same Ark that carried good animals also had evil beast inside the same Ark. You know Jesus Christ had a followership of what the Bible called the multitudes. And for me, multitudes means multiple attitudes; people with multiple inclinations; people with multiple tendencies; people with multiple behaviours. Infact, one of those that followed Jesus Christ was a thief who also sold him to death; he was called Judas Iscariot.Question is, how could somebody followed Jesus Christ as perfect as Jesus was; as instructive as he was; as impactful as he was and still be a thief and a murderer? That question is left for everybody to answer.

And I can tell you the worst of it all; There was personality called lucifer who was in Heaven and became satan the devil under the nose of God in Heaven; a place where there was no sin and could have been no sin at all. This guy became the inventor and the originator of sin. How is it possible for somebody to become a devil from being an Archangel right inside Heaven? That is how possible it is for anybody to be anything while inside the Church. Even the best of pastors, teachers, preachers in the World cannot change any man or woman who is unwilling to be changed.In case you feel frustrated at anything and you are airing your frustration here and there, or a transfer of aggression or frustration, the Church is not your place for transferring frustration and aggression.

We are willing to help you if you have so much bitterness, so much frustration and so much distraction in your life and you don’t know where to vent it but in situations like this, we can help you. I want to let you know that we love you and Jesus loves you. It is well with you and it is well with your loved ones. Gospel Singer, Mercy Chinwo has reacted to a fan who shared that she is also experiencing domestic violence in her home.

Mercy had posted the picture of Late Osinachi Nwachukwu on her page with the caption, “It is Well”.

Recall that news of Osinachi’s death flooded the social media space on Saturday.

The gospel music musician, who rose to prominence with the tune “Ekwueme,” which has been viewed more than 72 million times on YouTube, died on Saturday in an Abuja hospital.

Initially, the talented Abuja-based gospel act was said to have died of a mysterious disease.

Close friends and allies, on the other hand, have speculated that her tumultuous union was the cause of her untimely demise.

They also accused the Ekwueme singer’s husband of molesting and abusing her on a regular basis.

Frank Edwards, a colleague of hers, claimed on Saturday that the late singer had an abusive husband who often brutalised her before she died.

Peter Nwachukwu, the late prominent gospel artiste Osinachi’s husband, has been detained by the police for his wife’s death.

The 42-year-old musician died on Friday after spending several days in an unnamed Abuja hospital.

Osinachi’s colleagues accused her husband of abusing her while she was working as a lead singer at the Dunamis International Headquarters in Abuja.

In a live Instagram video, prominent musician Frank Edwards said that Osinachi’s husband abused her on multiple occasions.

He said,

“One time in a studio, this man slapped her just because she wanted to record the song in Igbo against his will. She does not do anything on her own.

“She would say, please beg my husband. She was at his mercy. I didn’t know the intensity of what she was going through; I didn’t know how somebody would be jealous of the wife he claimed to love.

“There are a lot of stories where people told her this and that, but what I know was that the control was too much. The other time somebody wanted me to get her for an event, and I contacted her, but she said ‘beg my husband.’

Osinachi’s elder sister was said to have also confirmed that the husband kicked her in the chest which led to her being taken to the hospital.

A Police source disclosed that police operatives, Sunday arrested Mr Nwachukeh and that investigation has commenced into the singer’s death as a result of alleged domestic violence.

Confirming Peter’s arrest, FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh said: “He is now in our custody. The younger brother of the deceased reported the matter and we have commenced investigation.”

Nigerian singer and songwriter Simisola Bolatito Kosoko, better known by her stage name Simi, has advised women in abusive relationships following the death of “Ekwueme” singer Osinachi Nwachukwu.

Recall, Osinachi’s death was announced on Friday night after reportedly battling cancer.

However, it was later alleged that the singer died in the hospital after suffering domestic violence from her husband.

Reports also had it that Osinachi refused to leave the marriage despite domestic violence because of her commitment to the church.

Reacting, Simi used her social media page to advise women to leave abusive relationships.
