Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been dismissed by Besiktas just eight months into his tenure, following the club’s elimination from the UEFA Conference League play-offs.

The Norwegian tactician, who took charge of the Turkish Super Lig side in January on an 18-month contract, oversaw their fourth-place finish last season. However, Thursday’s 1-0 defeat at home to Lausanne proved costly, with the Swiss side advancing 2-1 on aggregate.

Besiktas confirmed the decision in an official statement:
“Our contract with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been terminated following a decision made at the board meeting. Following the meeting, our chairman, Serdal Adalı, thanked Solskjaer for his services to date. We respectfully present this for the public’s information.”

The role was Solskjaer’s first managerial job since leaving Manchester United in 2021. He began the 2025/26 campaign with a 2-1 victory over Eyupspor, but results quickly faltered after a draw in the first leg against Lausanne and the decisive home defeat that followed.

Besiktas have yet to appoint a new head coach. Their next fixture in the Turkish Super Lig is against Alanyaspor on Sunday.

Manchester United initially seemed headed for their seventh defeat of the 2023/24 season when Mathias Jensen scored for Brentford after some defensive lapses at Old Trafford.

However, McTominay’s introduction in the 87th minute quickly turned the game around. The Scottish international scored a stunning 93rd-minute volleyed equalizer, displaying exceptional control before finding the bottom corner of the net. Former Manchester United centre-back Marcos Rojo claims that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was obliged to play Harry Maguire every week due to his exorbitant price tag.

United beat off stiff competition from Manchester City in acquiring Maguire from Leicester in 2019, spending more than £80 million to do so.

Maguire, on the other hand, has experienced severe criticism from fans and competitors alike since then and has been relegated by new manager Erik Ten Hag after three seasons as a starter.

Speaking to TyC Sports, Rojo recalled an incident in Maguire’s debut season in which he clashed with then-manager Solskjser over the Englishman’s poor form, only to be told there was nothing that could be done about it.

“That year [the 2019/20 season] I was very good in England, I was playing in the Europa League,” Rojo began. “But I was really angry with the coach because he was playing Maguire instead of me. Thank God they finally took him out from the starting line-up for Licha [Lisandro] Martinez.

“One day I went to Solskjaer’s office to tell him to let me leave for another club or put [me] in the starting line-up. It was wrong that he wasn’t letting me play. He told me: ‘They paid so much for him and he has to play no matter what.

“He [Maguire] was making huge mistakes already and I told Solskjaer: ‘Son of a b***h let me play, because this guy is making huge mistakes every week’.”

Only six months into Maguire’s first season, Rojo ultimately left United. He later joined Argentinian team Estudiantes on loan in January after making three Premier League appearances during a half-season marred by injuries.

When Maguire joined United, he played every minute of his debut league season, and he was on course to repeat it until an injury forced him to miss the final four games of the 2020–21 season.

When Ralf Rangnick took over as manager after Solskjaer was fired in November of the year after, Maguire continued to play often, and Ten Hag even started the Englishman in his first two games.

However, after crushing losses to Brighton and Brentford, Maguire was quickly dropped to the sidelines as Ten Hag formed his ideal partnership with Martinez and Raphael Varane.

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire feels that his performances this season have done him “justice,” but he is convinced that he will not be satisfied until he plays in every game.

Maguire has unceremoniously fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford this season after being one of the first names on the teamsheet under the previous manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Erik ten Hag has preferred a Lisandro Martinez–Raphael Varane partnership and will frequently turn to Victor Lindelof from the bench if he wants an extra layer of defensive protection.

After the embarrassing 4-0 loss to Brentford in August, Maguire was benched, and he hasn’t started back-to-back Premier League games since.

“This year I feel I am in a good place mentally, physically and every time I’ve started a game of football I’ve done myself justice and done well,” he said after playing all 90 minutes of the 2-0 win against Everton over the weekend.

“I’m not going to stand here and say I love it, or that I like it. I don’t,” he said of his situation this season. “I want to play every game and I have done for the last eight years of my career. Also, I have to respect the manager and his decisions and also respect how good the competition is at centre-back at this club. It is, and I believe that.”

Having lifted the Carabao Cup already this season, Maguire still has his eyes on two more as United target the FA Cup and Europa League. He also predicts ‘numerous starts’ in what remains of 2022/23.

“I will work as hard as I can in training and take every game as it comes as I’m sure I’m going to get numerous starts between now and the end of the season,” he said.

“It is not like I’ve not started. I’ve started the last two games before the international break against Fulham and Betis. It is not like I’ve been frozen out or not been involved. I’m still playing a lot of games but obviously as a footballer I want to play every game. But I’m sure every other centre-back in the dressing room does as well and the manager cannot play all four.”

As his Manchester United career stalled, Jesse Lingard has acknowledged that he sometimes drank alcohol “to try to take the agony away.”

Lingard joined Nottingham Forest last summer on a free transfer, signing a one-year deal at The City Ground after ending a 22-year stay at Manchester United.

The 30-year-old had a fruitful loan at West Ham United before coming back to Manchester United in 2021, but despite being persuaded to stay, he was unable to push his way back into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s lineup.

Lingard, who scored the winning goal in the 2016 FA Cup final, admitted that he had become dependent on alcohol before bed because of the abuse he was experiencing from fans and his mother’s struggle with depression.

“I was drinking before bed, having a nightcap,” Lingard told The Diary Of A CEO podcast. “I look back now and think, ‘what was I doing that for?’ But I needed something to try and take the pain away and put me at ease somehow.“I was trying to forget what was going on. But it makes it 10 times worse.

“You’re getting that much abuse, and I’m already down enough, and I’ve got to perform. I’m already going through things you don’t know about…I felt like the world was on my shoulders.”

Speaking about his mother’s depression, Lingard continued: “The depression was so bad she couldn’t really cope any more and she needed to go away and get help.

“But leaving me with my little sister who was 11 at the time and my little brother who was 15, for me, I was still going through my own things as well.

“So I wasn’t really the big brother they wanted at the time. They always get the fun, laughy, bubbly Jesse and I was going through my own things, so I was on autopilot. I just wasn’t there mentally.”

Lingard discloses that he eventually spoke to Solskjaer about his issues after being abused after United’s FA Cup win over Derby in March 2020.

“To be abused like that tipped it. I didn’t want to be on the pitch, I didn’t want to play. I didn’t want to quit football, I never would have quit football, but I needed a break.

“I need to find some motivation, some fire in my belly to get going again because I can’t be doing this.

“We kept it close-knit but even just to have Ole say, ‘how is your mum? How is she doing?’ helped, to let people know what I was going through.”

Jesse Lingard has criticized his former club Manchester United, stating that club management made “false promises” and that he was never given a legitimate explanation for why he was frozen out.

The 30-year-old midfielder made 232 appearances for United after graduating from their academy, but he struggled to get playing time in his later years at Old Trafford and only made four appearances in his final year.

After being sent out on loan to West Ham for the second half of the 2020–21 campaign, Lingard made an impression, but upon his return to United, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick continued to ignore him.

Ahead of his return to Old Trafford as a player for Nottingham Forest, a freshly promoted team, Lingard admits he still feels misunderstood by his treatment at United.

I don’t know why I wasn’t playing,” Lingard told The Telegraph.

Although Lingard’s Forest career has had a rocky beginning, he now appears to be finding his footing alongside the rest of the team as their form steadily improves.

In the summer of 2022, Forest added 22 players, completely overhauling their team and starting over in preparation for their re-entry into the top division.

While there were unavoidable growing pains, Steve Cooper’s club is sure they can compete with most teams and perhaps score enough points to make it through another season.

To keep all 4 key players at Old Trafford through 2024, Manchester United has activated one-year contract extensions for Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw, Fred, and Diogo Dalot.

According to the principal terms of their separate contracts, the four players’ contracts were set to expire at the end of this season. But United has frequently added 12-month options to contracts that can be exercised to give the team more insurance against losing players as free agents.

United now has more time to negotiate longer-term contracts or look for transfer fees.

“I can confirm it,” Ten Hag told MUTV. “We are happy because the squad is going in the right direction and those players [have] a massive contribution in that direction.”

Rashford in particular has been in resurgent form this season, scoring nine goals in all competitions by the time club football paused for the World Cup – almost double his tally for the whole of what had been a disappointing 2021/22 campaign.

He then scored three times at the World Cup.

Under Ten Hag, Shaw and Fred have both made an impression, and Dalot, whose United career had previously seemed doomed to failure, has become stronger and stronger.

The Portuguese right-back drastically lost favor under former United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but this season he has flourished after passing Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the hierarchy.

United have a handful of others out of contract at the end of the season, including David de Gea.

According to reports, discussions with De Gea are ongoing, and regardless of the outcome, both parties are determined to keep their positive relationships.

The goalkeeper’s contract still has an option, but United is not considering exercising it, and any new agreement would have to come with much lower money than his present £375,000 weekly salary.

Axel Tuanzebe, Phil Jones, and Tom Heaton all have expiring contracts, but the latter two have 12-month options that might be exercised.

In November 2021, Rangnick was appointed as Man United’s interim manager after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was fired. The German did not make any signings while in charge of Man United.

The German stated how he suggested the club’s hierarchy target six players in January: Josko Gvardiol, Christopher Nkunku, Alvaro Morata, Luis Diaz, Dusan Vlahovic, and Erling Haaland.

We also talked about Alvaro Morata, Luis Diaz, Dusan Vlahovic and, as I said, Haaland when they were still on the market. But the club decided at that time to rebuild the team under the new coach.”
