Speaking at his post-match press conference, Slot explained that the decision was tactical rather than due to injury or disciplinary reasons.

“The last part of the game was about surviving for us, this was a 20-25 mins where we were only defendin and it’s better to save his energy for the upcoming games,” he said.

Slot added that after Liverpool conceded twice, the team’s priority shifted to damage control against a dominant PSG side. Bringing Salah on late would have seen him defending deep in his own box—a role that does not play to his strengths.

“It didn’t make sense to bring him on just to defend; the situation required defensive stability over attacking impact,” Slot explained.

Liverpool now face a challenging second leg at Anfield on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, needing to overturn a two-goal deficit to progress to the semifinals.

The Egyptian superstar, widely known as the “King” at Anfield, is set to bring his remarkable nine-year journey with the club to an early close, despite a contract originally expected to run until 2027. An agreement has now been reached for him to leave this summer, marking the end of an era.

Salah broke the news himself on Tuesday evening through an emotional video shared on social media, where he reflected on his time at the club and the deep connection he has built with the fans and the city.

“I wanted to start by saying that I never imagined this club, this city, this people would become part of my life,” Salah stated.

“Liverpool is not just a football club, it’s a passion, it’s a history, it’s a spirit. I can’t explain it to anyone not part of this club.”

Looking back on his time with the Reds, Salah highlighted the unity and resilience that defined the team through different eras, including under managers Jürgen Klopp and Arne Slot.

“We won the most important trophies. We fought together through the hardest times of our lives.”

Since arriving from AS Roma in 2017, Salah has carved out a legacy as one of Liverpool’s greatest-ever players. His numbers tell the story: 255 goals, placing him third on the club’s all-time scoring list, two Premier League titles (2019/20 and 2024/25), a UEFA Champions League triumph in 2019, and four Premier League Golden Boots—matching the record set by Thierry Henry.

Even in a challenging current campaign, where he was briefly left out by manager Arne Slot, Salah has remained central to the team’s identity. His decision to announce his departure early is being seen as a way to give both the club and its supporters time to prepare for life after one of their modern legends.

Speculation continues to grow about his next destination, with links to the Saudi Pro League and Major League Soccer making the rounds. However, Salah has made it clear that his focus remains on finishing the season strongly with Liverpool.

“Leaving is never easy,” Salah admitted. “You gave me the best time of my life. I will always be one of you! This club will always be my home, to me and to my family. Thank you for everything. Because of all of you, I will never walk alone.”

Following the announcement, Liverpool FC confirmed that plans are underway to honour Salah’s incredible contribution, with a special celebration set to take place at Anfield after the club’s final home game of the season.

England’s oldest football competition has already produced its fair share of drama this season, and the remaining fixtures suggest that the excitement is far from over.

Road to Wembley: FA Cup Quarter-Final Ties Confirmed

Among the standout ties is a heavyweight showdown between Manchester City and Liverpool. With several Premier League giants still in the competition, a blockbuster clash always seemed inevitable.

Unfortunately for City and Liverpool, they were the ones paired together. If their upcoming cup encounter delivers even a fraction of the drama seen in their recent league meeting, fans can expect a thrilling contest.

While some of their domestic rivals have already faced each other, Chelsea once again avoided Premier League opposition and will host Port Vale. The League One side earned their spot in the quarter-finals after producing one of the biggest upsets of the fifth round, defeating Sunderland. Despite the historic achievement, manager Jon Brady admitted the schedule could be challenging.

“It’s a bit of a pain in the bum, to be honest!” he said after guiding the third-tier club to their first FA Cup quarter-final appearance in 72 years. “It’s a privilege, but it’s tough as well.”

Elsewhere, Arsenal will travel to face Southampton. The last time the Gunners reached the FA Cup quarter-final stage, they went on to lift the trophy, and Mikel Arteta will be hoping history repeats itself. The Arsenal boss has yet to add another major trophy in the six years since that triumph, but his team is still competing across four competitions this season.

Manchester City, meanwhile, remain in pursuit of a potential quadruple and appear to be finding their rhythm at the right moment. Unlike Arsenal and Chelsea, who have largely avoided top-flight opposition, City have had a tougher path. They recently came from behind to secure a 3–1 victory over Newcastle United, and their quarter-final clash with Liverpool promises another stern test.

For Liverpool, reaching this stage was no easy task either. The Reds had to overcome Wolverhampton Wanderers, a fixture made even more intense after Wolves had beaten them at the same stadium just three nights earlier. That result added extra motivation for Jurgen Klopp’s side, and another dramatic encounter could be on the cards when they meet City again.

Elsewhere, Leeds United have been upbeat about their chances as they chase a first FA Cup semi-final appearance since 2003. The Yorkshire club will face either West Ham United or Brentford, depending on the outcome of their Monday night clash.

2025–26 FA Cup Quarter-Final Draw

Southampton vs Arsenal

Chelsea vs Port Vale

Manchester City vs Liverpool

West Ham United or Brentford vs Leeds United

With several big names still in the competition and a few potential giant-killing stories brewing, the FA Cup’s magic looks set to continue as the tournament edges closer to Wembley.

Ouattara has been one of Brentford’s standout players in February, contributing two goals and two assists. The forward also scored decisive goals against Aston Villa and Newcastle United, while playing a key role in the club’s 1–1 draw against Arsenal.

Gyökeres also had his moments during the month. The Swedish striker delivered a second-half brace against Sunderland after coming off the bench and later scored twice again during February’s north London derby. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta praised the performance as one of the best displays of the striker’s debut season.

Manchester City’s push to keep pace with Arsenal has been driven by the attacking contributions of Semenyo and O’Reilly. Both players managed to outscore Erling Haaland in February and have benefited from tactical adjustments introduced by manager Pep Guardiola.

Meanwhile, Šeško proved decisive for Manchester United, scoring three goals during the month — each of which directly contributed to a positive result for the club. Without those strikes, United would have dropped several crucial points in the league table.

Liverpool captain Van Dijk also made the shortlist after returning to a level close to his best form during February, providing defensive stability for the Reds.

Carrick is widely viewed as the frontrunner after guiding Manchester United to 10 points from a possible 12 in February. Although the team’s performances were not always convincing, the results ensured the club maintained momentum under the former midfielder.

If Carrick wins the award again, he would become the first manager since Ange Postecoglou to claim the honour in consecutive months, a feat last achieved in September and October 2023.

Brentford boss Andrews also continues to earn recognition for keeping the club competitive despite a summer that saw the departures of several key figures, including their captain, goalkeeper, top scorers, and former manager.

Meanwhile, Slot guided Liverpool through a mixed month that included a defeat to Manchester City, narrow wins over Sunderland and Nottingham Forest, and a chaotic 5–2 victory that left fans with as many questions as celebrations.

Guardiola’s City side, however, recorded the most wins in February, strengthening their title challenge — though a defeat to Forest at the start of March slightly dampened that momentum.

The winners of the February awards are expected to be announced soon, as the Premier League season continues to heat up heading into its decisive final months.

Now, the real tension begins.

Real Madrid’s reward for edging past Benfica in the playoffs? A heavyweight, two-legged duel against Manchester City. It’s the latest chapter in what’s quickly becoming a modern European rivalry, and one pre-tournament favorite is guaranteed to exit early.

Defending champions Paris Saint-Germain will get a shot at redemption against Chelsea, months after the Blues outclassed them in the Club World Cup final. Expect intensity.

Meanwhile, Barcelona head to St James’ Park for a tricky test against Newcastle United, where the atmosphere alone could tilt the tie.

On another front, Liverpool square off with Galatasaray, while Arsenal, who topped the league phase with a flawless record, must overcome Bayer Leverkusen to keep their ambitious quadruple dream alive.

Bayern Munich, runners-up in the league phase and perennial contenders, face a dangerous Atalanta side that squeezed through thanks to a dramatic late penalty against Borussia Dortmund.

And don’t overlook Atletico Madrid vs. Tottenham Hotspur, a clash that promises tactical warfare.

Player of the Month contenders

The January Player of the Month race is packed with standout individual performances from across the league:

Yasin Ayari (Brighton & Hove Albion)

Patrick Dorgu (Manchester United)

Enzo Fernández (Chelsea)

Junior Kroupi (Bournemouth)

Crysencio Summerville (West Ham United)

Igor Thiago (Brentford)

Harry Wilson (Fulham)

Florian Wirtz (Liverpool)

Brighton midfielder Yasin Ayari kicks off the list after a quietly impressive month. The 22-year-old has already surpassed last season’s goal and assist numbers, registering two goals and two assists in four January appearances.

At Manchester United, Patrick Dorgu caught the eye during a flawless month under interim boss Michael Carrick. Deployed high up the pitch, the winger found the net against Arsenal and Manchester City, while also providing an assist during Darren Fletcher’s brief spell in charge.

Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández delivered when it mattered most, scoring late winners against Manchester City and West Ham. His January return of three goals and one assist under Liam Rosenior highlighted his growing leadership role in midfield.

West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville rediscovered his scoring touch after a long drought. Having gone without a league goal since October 2024, the Dutchman struck in three consecutive matches against Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, and Sunderland.

Brentford striker Igor Thiago is chasing history, hoping to become the first player to win the award twice this season. He enjoyed a prolific month, scoring five goals, including a hat-trick against Everton and a brace against Sunderland.

Harry Wilson earns back-to-back nominations after another productive spell for Fulham. With goals against Chelsea, Brighton and Liverpool, the Welshman continues to push Marco Silva’s side toward European contention as his contract situation draws attention.

Completing the list is Florian Wirtz, who receives his first nomination since joining Liverpool. The German midfielder contributed three goals and one assist, standing out during a difficult month in which the Reds managed just one win from six league games.

Manager of the Month contenders

The managerial shortlist reflects dramatic turnarounds and impressive short-term impacts:

Michael Carrick (Manchester United)

Sean Dyche (Nottingham Forest)

Andoni Iraola (Bournemouth)

Liam Rosenior (Chelsea)

United interim boss Michael Carrick makes an immediate impression, guiding the Red Devils to back-to-back wins over Manchester City and Arsenal in his brief January spell.

At Nottingham Forest, Sean Dyche steadied the ship after a worrying run of four straight defeats. His side responded with two wins and a draw, suffering just one loss against Aston Villa.

Andoni Iraola also turned Bournemouth’s fortunes around. After enduring an 11-match winless run, the Cherries sparked into life with a dramatic 3–2 victory over Tottenham, followed by further wins against Liverpool and Wolves.

Chelsea’s Liam Rosenior rounds off the list after a dream start to his Premier League tenure. Victories over Brentford, Crystal Palace, and West Ham made him only the fourth English manager to win his first three league games.

With new names dominating both shortlists, January’s awards promise fresh winners and plenty of debate among fans before the final verdict is announced.

The 2025-26 FA Cup has been whittled down to the final 32 teams, and the roadmap to the fifth round is now clear following the official release of the fourth-round draw.

As usual, the draw has delivered a familiar mix of giant clashes, tricky away trips, and classic cup narratives. Arsenal and Chelsea were both handed ties against Football League opposition, while Liverpool could be set for a heavyweight Premier League showdown with Brighton & Hove Albion, but only if they first navigate their third-round encounter with Barnsley on Monday night.

Arsenal had to dig deep themselves in the previous round, surviving a stern test from Championship side Portsmouth before sealing progression. Their reward is a meeting with Wigan Athletic, the 2013 FA Cup winners who know all too well how to spring surprises in this competition.

Chelsea, meanwhile, began life under Liam Rosenior in emphatic fashion with a commanding win over Charlton Athletic. Fate then added an interesting twist, pairing the Blues with Hull City, Rosenior’s former club.

The headline fairy tale from the third round belonged to Macclesfield. The sixth-tier side—only purchased off Rightmove in 2020, produced one of the shocks of the season by convincingly dumping out defending champions Crystal Palace. Their reward? Another crack at top-flight opposition, this time against Brentford, as their remarkable cup journey continues.

Not everyone enjoyed a smooth passage. Manchester United were among the biggest names to exit the competition, falling to Brighton in a bruising third-round defeat at Old Trafford. Brighton’s prize for that upset is a fourth-round tie against either Liverpool or Barnsley, setting up the possibility of another major scalp.

Elsewhere, there are several eye-catching fixtures across the draw, with Premier League sides facing stern tests and lower-league teams dreaming of another famous night.

So far this season, no player or coach has managed to win their respective awards twice, but that could change on the players’ side this month. On the managerial front, however, December is guaranteed to crown a fifth different winner.

December 2025 Premier League Player of the Month nominees

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Leeds United)

Rayan Cherki (Manchester City)

Hugo Ekitiké (Liverpool)

Phil Foden (Manchester City)

Erling Haaland (Manchester City)

Morgan Rogers (Aston Villa)

Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa)

Harry Wilson (Fulham)

Leeds United’s revival in December owes a lot to Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The striker found the net six times in five league games, helping Leeds climb out of the relegation zone. Victories over Chelsea and Crystal Palace, combined with draws against Liverpool, Brentford and Sunderland, highlighted a gritty and productive month.

Manchester City dominate the shortlist with three nominees. Rayan Cherki was a creative force, producing four assists and a goal as City stormed to five wins. Phil Foden delivered at the other end, scoring four goals and adding an assist to cap off a strong run of form.

Erling Haaland, who picked up the award back in September, is eyeing a second win after another ruthless month in front of goal. The Norwegian recorded five goals and three assists, underlining his status as one of the league’s most feared forwards.

Liverpool’s Hugo Ekitiké kept pace with Haaland, also scoring five goals. His strikes proved decisive against Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton, while he grabbed a brace in a high-scoring draw with Leeds.

Aston Villa are also well represented. Morgan Rogers ended December with four goals, while Ollie Watkins hit five during Villa’s impressive winning streak, which stretched to 11 matches before coming to an end against Arsenal.

Fulham winger Harry Wilson enjoyed a standout month as well. He chipped in with two important goals and four assists, playing a key role in pushing the Cottagers into the conversation for European qualification.

December 2025 Premier League Manager of the Month nominees

Mikel Arteta (Arsenal)

Unai Emery (Aston Villa)

Daniel Farke (Leeds United)

Pep Guardiola (Manchester City)

Arsenal may be missing from the player shortlist, but Mikel Arteta remains in contention for managerial honours. Despite dealing with a defensive injury crisis, he guided the Gunners to five wins from six matches, strengthening their grip at the top of the table.

Arteta’s December campaign featured two clashes with Unai Emery’s Aston Villa. While honours were shared overall, Villa recorded a notable win against Arsenal and also defeated Chelsea and Manchester United, keeping themselves firmly in the title race.

Down at the other end of the table, Daniel Farke deserves recognition for Leeds United’s turnaround. The Yorkshire side went unbeaten throughout December, navigating tough fixtures against Chelsea and Liverpool. A tactical reshuffle proved effective, helping Leeds pull clear of immediate danger.

Pep Guardiola rounds off the shortlist after Manchester City closed out 2025 in perfect fashion, winning all five of their league games. With three City players nominated for Player of the Month, the Spaniard’s inclusion comes as little surprise.

The road to Wembley has officially begun, with the 2025/26 FA Cup Third Round Draw serving its usual dose of surprises, drama, and mouthwatering fixtures.

Holders Crystal Palace will begin their title defence with what looks like a fairytale clash, drawing non-league Macclesfield in a matchup that embodies everything magical about the competition.

Road to Wembley Begins: FA Cup 2025/26 Draw Sparks Excitement

Elsewhere, the draw delivered heavyweight meetings that will immediately test the resolve of some Premier League giants. Manchester United were handed a tricky home tie against Brighton & Hove Albion, a team that hasn’t exactly been shy in Manchester in recent seasons.

For Ruben Amorim and his men, it’s an opportunity to bury the sting of their shocking Carabao Cup exit to Grimsby Town, but Brighton’s growing confidence makes this anything but straightforward.

Over in north London, Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa stands out as one of the most eye-catching pairings of the round. Unai Emery’s Villa have been a thorn in the side of top teams, and a trip to face Spurs sets the stage for one of the round’s most tightly balanced encounters.

Some of England’s other big sides will be packing their bags for potentially awkward away days. Arsenal are off to Fratton Park for a gritty meeting with Championship side Portsmouth, a ground known for its old-school intensity. Chelsea, meanwhile, remain in the capital but still face a stern test as they cross London to take on Charlton Athletic.

At Anfield, Arne Slot’s under-pressure Liverpool have been paired with League One’s Barnsley, a team with a history of causing trouble for bigger clubs in this tournament. The champions of England, Manchester City, are set to welcome Exeter City to the Etihad, a tie that looks straightforward on paper but will still require focus.

Two all-Premier League battles add further spice to the mix. Everton face high-flying Sunderland at Goodison Park, while Newcastle United will host Bournemouth in what many are already calling the “Eddie Howe Derby.”

All fixtures are scheduled to take place across the weekend of January 9 to 12, when the country’s oldest cup competition once again delivers its unique blend of hope, heartbreak, and giant-killing potential.

Liverpool’s nightmare run went from bad to worse at Anfield as they were ripped apart 4–1 by a ruthless PSV side, leaving the home fans stunned and the pressure on Arne Slot reaching boiling point.

What was supposed to be a chance to steady the ship became another chapter in Liverpool’s spiralling form. After back-to-back 3–0 defeats, supporters hoped the Reds would react; instead, they watched their team collapse again, this time in front of their own crowd.

With the club sinking into the bottom half of the Premier League and now wobbling in Europe, the alarm bells have never been louder.

The evening started horribly. Barely had the dust settled when Liverpool conceded their seventh unanswered goal in recent matches.

Ivan Perisic stepped up to bury a penalty after a handball call against Virgil van Dijk, a decision the captain protested passionately, though replays showed his arm was clearly in the wrong place.

Liverpool did manage a response. Dominik Szoboszlai, operating in midfield while Curtis Jones filled in at right-back, pounced on a rebound after Cody Gakpo’s strike was parried.

Van Dijk almost flipped the game on its head moments later, rattling the crossbar with a powerful header as the home side briefly looked alive again.

But whatever hope Liverpool had evaporated after the break.

Defensive errors The recurring theme of Slot’s struggling team offered PSV all the space they needed. Guus Til beat Milos Kerkez to a loose ball to restore the Dutch side’s lead, and soon after, a costly mistake from Ibrahima Konaté gifted PSV a third.

From there, the floodgates opened.
