Ghanaian Afro-fusion sensation Gyakie (Jackline Acheampong) has officially rolled out her debut album, After Midnight, a 17-track masterpiece that cements her place as one of Africa’s most promising voices.

Known for her warm vocals and emotive storytelling, the singer uses this project to weave together Afrobeats, R&B, and highlife into a soundscape that mirrors the emotions and energy of late-night hours.

After Midnight is a personal milestone, following her acclaimed EPs Seed (2020) and My Diary (2022), which produced hits like Forever and Flames with Davido.

The new album reflects her evolution as both a singer and songwriter, paying homage to her roots—her father, Nana Acheampong, is a Ghanaian highlife legend while also drawing inspiration from R&B, hip-hop, and pop.

The concept of the album is rooted in Gyakie’s creative process: most songs were written during the stillness of the night, which she describes as her most peaceful and inspiring moments.

This gives the project a duality of soulful reflection balanced with vibrant, celebratory energy. Tracks like Sankofa carry deep emotional weight, while House Party featuring Young Jonn offers infectious, dance-ready vibes.

The project also boasts a star-studded lineup of collaborators. American R&B act 6LACK joins her on Damn U, Shatta Wale infuses dancehall fire into Harmattan, while UK rapper Headie One delivers grit on I’m Not Taken.

Other features include Omar Sterling on Luv and Y2K Love, Kojey Radical on Party Galore, and Young Jonn on House Party. Each artist was deliberately chosen to align with Gyakie’s vision, creating a seamless fusion of global sounds.

Beyond its sound, After Midnight is rich with themes of love, heartbreak, healing, and freedom. Gyakie revealed she penned most of the songs herself, often beginning with a mood or emotion before shaping melodies and lyrics around it. This organic process gives the album an authenticity that resonates deeply.

Critics have praised After Midnight for its cinematic depth and emotional resonance, describing it as Gyakie’s most ambitious work yet.

The album’s visuals, directed by Alex Piper, who has worked with the likes of Rema and Travis Scott, capture her journey from rising star to global force. With nearly 200 million Spotify streams from her earlier projects, Gyakie’s debut full-length is expected to propel her even further on the international stage.

Ghanaian sensation Gyakie has heightened anticipation for her long-awaited debut album ‘After Midnight‘ with the release of its official trailer on Monday, August 18, 2025.

The trailer drop comes just weeks ahead of the album’s arrival on August 29, setting the stage for what promises to be one of the most talked-about African music projects of the year.

Running one minute and twenty-six seconds, the visual teaser unfolds like a short film, weaving together the project’s central themes of identity, tradition, and self-discovery.

It begins in a modest bedroom where a young woman symbolizing Gyakie is surrounded by vintage posters and a humming ceiling fan, immersed in music.

The calm is disrupted when two figures dressed in traditional Ghanaian attire step into the room, instantly introducing a striking contrast between heritage and modernity.

The new track follows the reflective Sankofa, released in May, and further establishes Gyakie’s reputation for blending soulful introspection with Afro-fusion finesse.

Emerging from the quiet, reflective atmosphere that defines her upcoming project, Unconditional explores themes of romantic yearning and the desire for love that is freely given, not earned.

With lyrics like, “Come and give me love, you no for pay,” Gyakie delivers a direct and heartfelt message that strips relationships down to their most honest core, seeking affection without strings attached.

Unlike the upbeat dancefloor bangers currently dominating West Africa’s charts, Unconditional takes a softer, more contemplative approach. Gyakie’s velvet-smooth vocals carry the weight of longing with grace, layered over a mellow yet rich Afro-fusion instrumental. The soundscape feels warm and intimate, drawing listeners into a space where emotional vulnerability is celebrated, not masked.

The track positions Gyakie as a leading figure in the movement of African artists, reshaping what modern Afrobeats and R&B can sound like. While contemporaries like Black Sherif stretch the boundaries of genre with raw, emotive storytelling, Gyakie leans into a quieter power, offering listeners a soundtrack to love’s most personal and honest moments.

Unconditional highlights a more forthright Gyakie, unafraid to express her desires but doing so with the poise and grace that made her breakout single, Forever, a regional and global success. Her ability to balance emotional openness with self-respect shines throughout the song, affirming her growth as both a vocalist and a songwriter.

Having earned the 2022 3Music Woman of the Year award and international acclaim with Forever charting on Billboard, Gyakie is proving she’s more than just a viral hitmaker. Unconditional is a clear indicator of an artist transitioning from the spotlight of early success into a more grounded, long-term musical identity.

As anticipation builds for the release of After Midnight, Unconditional offers a taste of the album’s direction—one where late-night emotions and lyrical honesty meet rich, contemporary African rhythms. It’s a statement of intent from an artist who understands that true strength often lies in soft moments and sincere words.

Adding to the achievement, Gyakie is also one of the cover stars for this year’s special edition — a coveted honor that cements her status as a continental music luminary and a trailblazing young talent.

“Cover girl @forbesafrica 30 under 30 class of 2025 🤍 This is just the beginning,” she shared on social media, celebrating the honor with fans.

With the release of her powerful new single “Sankofa,” the singer-songwriter, born Jackline Acheampong, sets the emotional tone for her long-awaited debut album, After Midnight, due later this year. It’s her first offering of the year — and it’s already resonating like a late-night confession whispered to the soul.

Co-written with trusted collaborator Eyram Gbewonyo (Afrolektra), Sankofa draws its name and essence from the revered Ghanaian Adinkra symbol, meaning “to return and fetch what’s been left behind.”

The song is more than a cultural nod — it’s a sonic homecoming wrapped in vulnerability, loss, and quiet strength. Gyakie’s voice — honeyed, aching, resolute — floats over minimalist production, as she reflects on solitude, heartbreak, and the sacred midnight hours that inspired the album’s name.

“It’s about going back, confronting the pain, and finding peace in it,” Gyakie shared. Inspired by personal moments of late-night tears and her mother’s post-midnight prayer rituals, Sankofa unfolds like a diary entry — raw, honest, and healing.

The track, which arrived after weeks of cryptic social media teases and a buzz-building appearance at the 2025 Forbes Summit, has struck a chord with fans. Many are calling it a nocturnal masterpiece — the kind of song you play when the world sleeps but your heart won’t let you.

As the lead single under RCA Records UK and Sony Music Africa, Sankofa is a bold and graceful step forward for Gyakie, who first captivated listeners with her 2020 breakout Forever and later, her My Diary EP featuring Afrobeats superstar Davido. Now, with After Midnight, she’s crafting a full-length story that’s both deeply personal and universally relatable.

Already climbing streaming charts, Sankofa signals Gyakie’s transition from rising star to full-fledged force — a voice not just for love, but for introspection, identity, and resilience. Let the clock strike twelve — Gyakie is ready to soundtrack your stillest moments.

For many women in music, the struggle isn’t about making hits; it’s about just being heard. The lack of exposure limits opportunities for collaborations, airplay and global reach. It’s a cycle that stifles growth and innovation, forcing many talented women musicians into the shadows.

Amplifying voices across the continent

Change is possible, and in 2021, Spotify took a decisive step toward breaking these barriers with the launch of the Spotify EQUAL programme, a game-changer for women artists worldwide. At the heart of EQUAL is its mission to increase the representation of women in music.

By dedicating global and local playlists exclusively to women artists, Spotify has given them a platform to reach millions of listeners who might not otherwise have discovered their music.

The EQUAL Global playlist, along with region-specific ones like EQUAL Africa, has been instrumental in providing emerging and established women artists the visibility they deserve.

A growing movement for gender equity in music

Through the EQUAL Africa initiative, women artists from Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, and beyond have gained visibility on a global stage. Names like Ayra Starr, Gyakie, FAVE, as well as Nikita Kering and most recently Demi Lee Moore have been featured prominently, benefiting from the exposure and resources provided by Spotify.

The impact of the programme is visible. Within six months of the global EQUAL programme launch in March 2021, EQUAL playlists had cumulatively collected 29 million streams from 177 different markets.

So far, Spotify has profiled and amplified the voices of close to 40 African women artists on the continent, celebrating their talent while contributing to the growing global recognition of African music.

The growing momentum of African women artists is undeniable, with many of them achieving groundbreaking milestones and garnering international recognition.

Record-breaking success

It, therefore, didn’t come as a surprise that South African singer Tyla, who was once part of the EQUAL programme, made history as the first African artist with a solo track to surpass one billion streams on Spotify with her hit single “Water.”

This achievement marked a turning point in African music, proving that solo women artists from the continent can command massive global audiences and shape mainstream music culture.

A future of Equal opportunities

While the journey toward gender equity in the industry is still a work in progress, platforms that amplify women’s voices are paving the way for a more diverse, inclusive, and promising future.

Spotify has set the stage for transformation, but true equity in the music industry requires collective action from artists, listeners, and industry leaders alike.

Now, it’s up to us to build on this foundation and ensure that gender equity in music becomes a lasting reality.

Her album The Year I Turned 21, combined with a global tour and bold public appearances, has solidified her place at the forefront of African music. Starr’s fusion of Afropop and R&B continues to captivate fans, making her a global sensation.

Not far behind is Tems, a powerhouse known for her deep, soulful voice. Tems secured the second spot in both Nigeria and Ghana, while claiming fourth place in Kenya.

Her contributions to Afrobeats, alongside collaborations with global superstars like Rihanna and Beyoncé, have amplified her presence worldwide.

Ghana’s Gyakie, known for her sultry blend of Afropop and R&B, made a strong impact by securing the fourth spot among the most streamed artists in Ghana.

Women Taking the Global Stage

Beyond Africa, female artists have been breaking barriers and taking Afrobeats to international heights. Tems continues to lead the charge, with performances at notable global events like the prestigious North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands. Her song Love Me Jeje earned a place in Rolling Stone’s Top 100 Songs of 2024.

Pop sensation Tyla, hailing from South Africa, has also captured the world’s attention, clinching multiple awards at the 2024 BET Awards and earning three nominations at the 2024 MTV EMAs.

Her album TYLA reached number one in countries such as Uganda, Tanzania, and Jamaica, further elevating her status as a global star.

Ayra Starr and Tems are further cementing their international influence. Ayra Starr’s The Year I Turned 21 surpassed 2 million streams globally, while Tems’ album Born in the Wild amassed over 200,000 streams in Tokyo alone, illustrating their growing global appeal.

In a heartwarming yet contentious moment captured on video, Ghanaian sensation Gyakie was seen sharing GH¢50 (N4k) among street children in Ghana. While some lauded her act of kindness, others criticized the amount as inadequate for the children’s welfare.

Gyakie, the Ghanaian singer, touched hearts as she encountered five street children and decided to gift them GH¢50 (N4000) to share amongst themselves. The video, shared on TikTok, quickly garnered attention, sparking a range of reactions from viewers.

Celebrity acts of kindness are not unusual; Davido, Burna Boy, and Ayra Starr have all been involved in philanthropic endeavours. Gyakie’s gesture, however, stirred debate among her fans, with some praising her generosity while others questioned the adequacy of the donation for five children.

While many commended Gyakie’s efforts to make a difference, others suggested that, as a celebrity, she could have contributed more. Nonetheless, some of her supporters argued that being a celebrity doesn’t necessitate giving away all of one’s wealth.

Meanwhile, Jackline Acheampong, known as Gyakie, has revealed that she prefers not to pursue romantic relationships with her colleagues in the music industry.

In a recent interview with 3FM in Accra, she explained that navigating romantic involvement within the same professional field could present challenges. Gyakie’s perspective sheds light on the complexities that can arise when mixing personal and professional dynamics, highlighting her focus on maintaining clear boundaries in her relationships within the music industry.

“Love is a beautiful thing. I wouldn’t say its wrong, but at the same time, right now, I wouldn’t advise myself to be with someone in my industry,” she said.

Ghanaian artist Jackline Acheampong, known as Gyakie, has revealed that she prefers not to pursue romantic relationships with her colleagues in the music industry.

Opening up about the genesis of her inspiration, Gyakie shared that the song originated from a heartbreak she endured with someone she deeply cared for. During an interview, she expressed how the raw emotions she experienced while in Paris served as the catalyst for creating this heartfelt melody.

Appearing on TV3’s New Day program, Gyakie bared her soul, delving into the inspiration behind her latest chart-topper, “December.” She confessed that the song was born from the pain of heartbreak, and every lyric was a direct reflection of the emotions she felt during that difficult period.

“This song was supposed to drop December last year. It is fully broken heart. It’s actually one of the songs I wrote when I was in one of my sad moments, and I wrote it in Paris. Every word in the song is literally direct. A special someone disappointed me. When you sing and read the lyrics of the song you will understand it.” Gyakie revealed.
