The list, compiled by Spotify’s editorial team of cross-disciplinary editors and curators, spans music from 2015 to today, ranking songs not purely by streams but by cultural impact, musicality, storytelling, and lasting influence. Three African hits cracked the top 100, proving the continent’s pop dominance.

Number 8: “One Dance” – Drake, Wizkid & Kyla

Securing a spot in the top ten is no small feat, and the 2016 Afrobeats-infused collaboration “One Dance” earned its place. Drake, who had already experimented with Afrobeats via an unofficial remix of Wizkid’s “Ojuelegba,” broke fully into global pop with this track.

Blending Afrobeats and dancehall rhythms, “One Dance” not only gave Drake his first Billboard Hot 100 number one as a lead artist but also became the first song in Spotify history to reach one billion streams. Beyond the numbers, it proved that Afrobeats could anchor mainstream pop without losing its authenticity, opening doors for countless artists afterward.

Number 29: “Calm Down” – Rema

Rema’s “Calm Down” had already been making waves before Selena Gomez jumped on the remix, but the collaboration elevated the track into a global phenomenon. The remix fused Rema’s playful energy with Gomez’s polished confidence, producing a song that transcended borders. “Calm Down” became the most successful Afrobeats single in Billboard history and the first African artist-led track to hit one billion streams on Spotify.

The track redefined what a global remix could achieve, amplifying rather than diluting the original sound.

Number 50: “Water” – Tyla

Tyla’s “Water” represents another landmark moment, introducing the South African genre Amapiano to a worldwide audience. Known for its log drum and hypnotic grooves, the track retained the genre’s distinctiveness while making waves globally.

The song won the inaugural Grammy for Best African Music Performance and made Tyla the first South African solo artist to appear on the Billboard Hot 100 in 55 years. Its placement at number 50 signals that Amapiano has officially arrived on the international pop stage.

Spotify’s staff picks highlight that African artists are no longer novelties on global pop lists. Afrobeats and Amapiano now sit comfortably alongside the likes of Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, and The Weeknd, demonstrating that Africa’s sounds are reshaping the very landscape of contemporary pop music.

According to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), the Canadian superstar ranks No. 3 overall on its 2025 Global Artist Chart. Only Taylor Swift and Stray Kids sit above him. Despite finishing third overall, Drake remains the highest-ranked rapper on the list, extending a remarkable run that has defined the streaming era.

The IFPI chart measures global music consumption across streaming platforms, digital downloads and physical sales, offering a comprehensive snapshot of worldwide demand rather than performance in a single country.

The 2025 Global Top 10 Artists (IFPI)

Taylor Swift

Stray Kids

Drake

The Weeknd

Bad Bunny

Kendrick Lamar

Morgan Wallen

Sabrina Carpenter

Billie Eilish

Lady Gaga

Swift maintains the No. 1 spot for the sixth consecutive year, but Drake’s consistency tells its own story. While other rappers like Kendrick Lamar (No. 6), Tyler, The Creator (No. 12), and Eminem (No. 15) appear in the top 20, none have matched Drake’s sustained global dominance.

The Streaming Numbers Behind the Streak

The IFPI honour comes on the heels of another historic run on Spotify. Earlier in 2026, Drake became the first rapper to surpass 2 billion Spotify streams in a year alone. Shortly after, he set yet another benchmark, becoming the first artist in Spotify history to have 300 songs exceed 100 million streams.

Industry data suggests the next closest rapper has fewer than half as many tracks above the 100-million mark. That gap underscores what separates Drake from the pack: catalogue depth and daily listening power, not just headline-grabbing hits.

In an era where first-week sales generate buzz but long-term streams determine legacy, both the IFPI rankings and Spotify milestones reveal the same pattern: steady, global demand.

Eleven straight years at the top is no accident. It’s the product of relentless output, crossover appeal, and an uncanny ability to evolve with audience tastes while staying unmistakably Drake.

Drake has officially rewritten the record books on Spotify. On February 17, 2026, he became the first artist in the platform’s history to have 300 songs surpass 100 million streams, cementing his dominance as a streaming-era juggernaut.

The milestone was boosted by the track Mine, a collaboration with Beyoncé, which recently crossed the 100 million streams threshold. Behind him, global superstars such as Taylor Swift, Bad Bunny, The Weeknd, and Justin Bieber trail, highlighting just how unparalleled Drake’s streaming dominance has become.

What makes this achievement remarkable is the consistency and breadth of his catalogue, not just a handful of viral hits. While One Dance has amassed over 4 billion streams and God’s Plan remains one of Spotify’s biggest rap records, reaching 300 tracks with 100 million streams, demonstrates sustained engagement across albums, features, and deep cuts.

Even older material continues to pull impressive numbers. Songs from 2011’s Take Care still add to the tally, with the title track surpassing 700 million streams. Meanwhile, newer releases like NOKIA with PARTYNEXTDOOR, released in 2025, have already crossed 500 million streams. Tracks like “Nonstop” and “Jimmy Cooks” still average over 200,000 daily streams, years after dropping.

Industry analysts note that modern rankings rely heavily on daily listening habits, not just first-week sales. Drake’s achievement reflects a catalogue that delivers both depth and longevity, proving that he knows how to consistently meet audience demand.

With this record, Drake doesn’t just lead Spotify in numbers he defines what it means to build a streaming-era music empire through consistency, quality, and cultural relevance.

As the global music industry closed out 2025 on December 31, Forbes released its highly anticipated year-end ranking of the highest-paid musicians in the world, revealing a combined pre-tax income of nearly $1.9 billion USD among the top earners.

The staggering figure underscored a year of robust growth for the industry, powered largely by blockbuster concert tours, sustained streaming dominance, and increasingly sophisticated catalogue investments.

Live performances emerged as the biggest revenue driver, with artists capitalising on expansive stadium tours, high-demand residencies, and innovative touring models, while streaming and record sales continued to provide steady income for musicians with evergreen catalogues.

The list also reflected growing diversity across the industry, featuring eight female artists among the highest earners and spanning genres from pop, hip-hop, and R&B to country, Latin, and rock. Strategic business moves—particularly partial catalogue sales that preserved creative control—played a major role in boosting artist wealth, highlighting a shift toward sharper, more business-savvy career management.

The Weeknd Tops the List as World’s Highest-Paid Musician

At the summit of the 2025 rankings sits The Weeknd, who emerged as the highest-paid musician in the world, earning $298 million USD pre-tax. His earnings were anchored by the monumental After Hours Til Dawn Tour, which surpassed $1 billion USD in gross revenue, alongside strong global sales and streaming performance from his hit record Hurry Up Tomorrow.

The Canadian superstar also saw a major boost to his net worth following a landmark $200 million USD catalogue deal with Lyric Capital, a move that allowed him to retain creative control while unlocking immense financial value.

Pop powerhouse Taylor Swift followed closely in second place with $202 million USD, driven by chart-topping album sales from The Life of a Showgirl, a lucrative Disney+ documentary deal, and continued strength from her streaming catalogue.

In third place, Beyoncé earned $148 million USD, largely fueled by her record-breaking Cowboy Carter Tour, which grossed $407.6 million USD across a unique 32-show mini-residency format. The tour became the highest-grossing country tour in Billboard Boxscore history and the fastest to surpass $400 million USD.

Competitive Middle and Strong Finish

The middle of the top 10 proved fiercely competitive. Kendrick Lamar ranked fourth with $109 million USD, boosted by his headline appearance at the Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show, watched by 133.5 million viewers, and the success of his 2025 album GNX. His joint Grand National Tour with SZA also contributed significantly, grossing $358.7 million USD.

Coldplay and Shakira tied in fifth and sixth place with $105 million USD each, powered respectively by extended legs of the Music of the Spheres World Tour and Shakira’s massively successful Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour.

Drake finished seventh with $78 million USD, largely from relentless streaming success. The Canadian rapper closed 2025 as Spotify’s most-streamed rapper, pulling in 17.6 billion streams, narrowly surpassing his own 2023 record.

Rounding out the list were Chris Brown at eighth with $74 million USD, driven by the Breezy Bowl XX Stadium World Tour; Zach Bryan in ninth with $70 million USD, blending touring with catalogue deals; and global Latin icon Bad Bunny, who placed tenth with $66 million USD, fueled by massive streaming numbers and a successful residency in Puerto Rico.

On Tuesday, September 30, 2025, it was officially confirmed that “Wait For U,” her global smash collaboration with Future and Drake, has sold over 10 million copies in the United States.

That staggering figure places the track in the rare territory often reserved for the Recording Industry Association of America’s (RIAA) coveted Diamond certification.

For Tems real name Temilade Openiyi this is more than just another feather in her cap. It’s proof of her unrivalled influence in the world’s biggest music market.

The song, which stormed to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 back in 2022, had already made her the first African woman to sit on that throne.

It also secured her a Grammy win for Best Melodic Rap Performance, cementing her place among the greats.

But what makes this moment even bigger is how it underscores the global rise of African music.

From her breakout moment lending soul to Wizkid’s ‘Essence,’ to her critically acclaimed debut album ‘Born in the Wild,’ Tems has steadily evolved from Lagos newcomer to an international force rewriting the rulebook for Nigerian artists.

Her success isn’t just personal it’s symbolic. Every stream, every sale, every accolade pushes the global Afrobeats wave further into uncharted territory. And with Tems at the forefront, the future of African music looks brighter than ever.

The countdown to the 2025 edition of the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) has officially begun, with this year’s competition tipped to be one of the fiercest in the history of the continental showcase.

On Wednesday, August 27, the International Committee of AFRIMA, in partnership with the African Union Commission, released the nominees’ list, spotlighting African music heavyweights and rising stars across the continent.

Global Afrobeats icons Davido and Burna Boy will face off against Congolese legend Fally Ipupa, Moroccan hitmaker El Grande Toto, South African DJ Maphorisa, and Egyptian superstar Amr Diab. They will also compete with a fresh wave of emerging acts including Shallipopi, Himra, Moliy, Ayra Starr, Tanzanian crooner Juma Jux, and Senegal’s Mia Guissé.

Organizers revealed that AFRIMA 2025 received a record-breaking 10,717 submissions, the highest in its 12-year history. After 10 days of rigorous screening, a 13-member jury trimmed the entries down to 343 nominees spread across 40 categories, representing Africa’s regions and its diaspora.

Speaking on the unveiling, AFRIMA jury member Delani Makhalima hailed the growth of African music: “For years our voices were not heard, but today African music is global. This is AFRIMA, the biggest music entity on the continent.”

The 2025 awards ceremony is scheduled to hold in Lagos from November 25 to 30. The week-long programme will feature signature events such as the AFRIMA Music Village, the Africa Music Business Summit, the Nominees Party, and will climax with the grand finale on November 30.

The prestigious awards night will be broadcast live to audiences in more than 84 countries.

Nigerian music continues to break boundaries on the global stage, and this year’s MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) is no exception. The 2025 VMAs have officially rolled out their full list of nominations, with Afrobeats firmly in the spotlight and some of Nigeria’s biggest stars earning major recognition.

Leading the Nigerian contingent is Burna Boy, who secured three nominations across multiple categories. His Travis Scott-assisted hit TaTaTa earned him a nod for Best Afrobeats, while his powerful solo track Higher is nominated in the Video for Good category. Burna Boy also scores a mention for Best Visual Effects through his appearance in The Weeknd’s cinematic video for Hurry Up Tomorrow.

Wizkid also makes his mark with a nomination for Best Afrobeats for Piece Of My Heart, his collaboration with American singer Brent Faiyaz, a track that has drawn critical acclaim for its smooth blend of R&B and Afrobeats.

Afrobeats queen Tems and street-hop star Asake share a nomination in the same category for their joint effort Get It Right, while Asake earns an additional nod for Best Afrobeats with Active, another collaboration with Travis Scott.

Meanwhile, Rema rounds out the Nigerian nominees in the Best Afrobeats category with his soulful single Baby (Is It A Crime) further showcasing the depth and diversity within the genre.

The 2025 edition of the VMAs, which will air live on September 7, 2025, introduces a dedicated Best Afrobeats category a clear reflection of the genre’s meteoric rise and the growing impact of Nigerian artists on global music culture.

With five Nigerian stars securing prominent nominations, this year’s ceremony is poised to be a celebration of Afrobeats excellence. As anticipation builds, all eyes are now on the VMAs stage to see how these trailblazing artists fare.

Wireless Festival 2025 served up a major shocker on Sunday night as global rap icon Drake took the stage at Finsbury Park and stunned fans with a surprise appearance by UK rap heavyweight Central Cee.

In what has quickly become one of the festival’s most talked-about highlights, the duo debuted an unreleased collaboration live for the first time, triggering a massive reaction from the crowd.

Set against a pulsating drill-influenced beat, the track showcased Drake’s smooth melodic flow, setting the stage for Central Cee’s punchy wordplay and signature West London flair.

The chemistry between both stars was undeniable, and judging by the crowd’s explosive response, the track is already being tipped as a future chart-topper.

Although neither the song’s title nor release date was confirmed during the performance, anticipation is already building online, with fans praising the surprise drop and speculating about a potential joint project.

The performance marks a powerful cultural crossover, fusing Toronto’s finesse with London’s street energy, and further solidifies the global appeal of UK rap and drill music.

With Drake’s global pull and Central Cee’s rapid rise as one of the UK’s most dynamic voices, this collaboration is primed to make a major impact across continents once it officially drops.

Nigerian hitmaking rapper Odumodublvck has been officially announced as one of the performers at the 2025 Wireless Festival in the United Kingdom, a major milestone in his rising global profile.

The celebrated hip-hop artist will perform at the iconic Finsbury Park, London, between July 11 and July 13, joining a star-studded lineup for the 20th anniversary of one of the UK’s most iconic music festivals. This year’s edition is set to be headlined by Drake, who will make history with three different sets across three consecutive days, a Wireless Festival first.

Reacting to the news, Odumodublvck took to his official X (formerly Twitter) page to reveal that it was Drake himself who requested his inclusion, writing that the Canadian megastar “put me on the stage.”

This revelation has only heightened the excitement among fans and cemented the belief that Odumodublvck’s sound is resonating on the global stage.

Nigerian music powerhouses Wizkid and Tems have once again etched their names into the annals of music history, setting new records for African artists globally.

In celebration of its 10th anniversary, Apple Music unveiled its official list of the most-streamed songs of all time, spotlighting tracks that have garnered the highest plays on the platform since its inception. Among the global chart-toppers, Wizkid and Tems stood tall as the top-performing African artists, cementing their legacy in the international music space.

Wizkid, through his 2016 global smash hit “One Dance” with Drake and Kyla, emerged as the highest-ranked African act on the all-time chart. The collaboration not only took over global charts upon release but has continued to enjoy immense streaming success almost a decade later, highlighting Wizkid’s enduring influence.

Tems, on the other hand, made history as the highest-ranked and only female African artist on the all-time list. Her Grammy-winning appearance on “Wait For U,” a collaboration with Future and Drake, catapulted her to new heights. The song, released in 2022, received widespread acclaim and reinforced her global appeal.

Beyond the streaming milestones, Tems has also been in the spotlight for her impactful contributions to women in music. Her recently launched initiative aims to empower and support female creatives across Africa’s music industry—adding a layer of purpose to her already impressive artistic journey.

With this achievement, Wizkid and Tems have once again elevated Afrobeats and African music to the global stage, reinforcing the continent’s growing dominance in mainstream music conversations.

As part of its 10th-anniversary celebration, Apple Music has released a comprehensive list of its 500 most-streamed songs over the past decade, with British superstar Ed Sheeran claiming the No. 1 spot with his 2017 global smash, “Shape of You.”

The chart-topping single outperformed major hits like The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” and Drake’s “God’s Plan,” which came in at second and third place, respectively.

Since its release, Shape of You has set several streaming records, including the highest number of first-day plays on Apple Music, and it held firm atop the Billboard Hot 100 for 12 consecutive weeks. The song later earned Sheeran a Grammy Award for Best Pop Solo Performance in 2018.

The top 10 positions on the list feature a mix of global pop and hip-hop anthems. Post Malone makes two strong showings with “Sunflower” (featuring Swae Lee) at No. 4 and “Rockstar” (featuring 21 Savage) at No. 5. Other notable entries include:

Drake’s “One Dance” featuring Wizkid and Kyla

Travis Scott’s “Sicko Mode”

Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect”

Chris Brown’s “No Guidance”

Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy”

The rankings continue with familiar favourites: “Closer” by The Chainsmokers and Halsey lands at No. 11, Kendrick Lamar’s “Humble” at No. 15, Ariana Grande’s “7 rings” at No. 19, and BTS’s “Dynamite” making waves at No. 34.

Canadian rap icon Drake reigns supreme with 27 entries on the 500-song list, more than any other artist. Taylor Swift follows with 14, while Mariah Carey makes history as the only artist with a holiday song among the top entries her timeless classic “All I Want for Christmas Is You” sits comfortably at No. 100.

To commemorate the occasion, Apple Music curated a special 10th-anniversary playlist featuring all 500 songs and conducted an exclusive interview with Ed Sheeran. In a reflective chat with Zane Lowe, Sheeran said:

“No one can take away the song. I’ll be able to play it forever… I’m just grateful to have songs like that, where anywhere in the world, you can pick up a guitar and make someone happy.”

The full list and curated playlist are now available for streaming on Apple Music.
