Chelsea’s players have pledged to donate part of their FIFA Club World Cup bonuses to support the family of late Portuguese footballers Diogo Jota and André Silva.

The Blues lifted the trophy at the expanded tournament in July 2025, defeating Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the final at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium.

The victory reportedly earned the club around $114.6 million (£84.4m). Of that, $15.5 million (£11.4m) was set aside for player bonuses, with each squad member receiving over $500,000 before taxes, employer costs, and social security deductions.

Following discussions between Chelsea officials and the squad, it was agreed that an equal amount to one player’s bonus would be donated to Jota’s family.

The 21-year-old became the club’s fourth midfield addition of the summer transfer season when he joined the Reds from Bayern Munich on the final day of the window.

Erling Haaland, teammate Kevin De Bruyne, and Newcastle United strikers Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson top the list.

Haaland had two braces against Southampton and Leicester before contributing one goal and two assists in the team’s important win over Arsenal. He capped up April by matching the Premier League season goal record with a penalty versus Fulham.

Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has revealed he apologised to Tottenham midfielder Oliver Skipp after the Spurs player was struck in the head during Sunday’s 4-3 victory.

When Jota’s high boot made contact with Skipp’s head and the midfielder had to leave the game with a nasty cut, Spurs fans were outraged. Their rage increased when Jota went on to score the most recent winner while most fans thought he shouldn’t have been on the field in the first place.

Jota admitted he apologized to Skipp immediately following the game, but he claimed he supported the official’s choice to withhold a red card.

“It was not good, obviously it’s not my intention to cause any harm to him,” Jota told Premier League Productions. “But unfortunately, it happened.

“I asked him ‘sorry’, that’s all I could do after that bad tackle but I also think it’s not a red because I touched the ball and there was no intention to cause him any harm.”

Despite Jota’s conviction, interim Spurs manager Ryan Mason was astounded that Jota escaped further consequences for the incident.

“It’s one of the clearest red cards I’ve seen, it’s difficult to take,” Mason told Sky Sports. “It’s an impossible one to miss.

“When you talk about endangering an opponent, to draw blood from a stud when Skipp’s head is five-and-a-half feet in the air baffles me. That type of decision is maybe the difference between winning the game or not.

“It’s tough to understand and I would like an explanation. I saw the incident in real time and you have a feel for those sort of moments. The VAR official has the benefit of a replay.”

Mason continued: “I would like an explanation and a reason why it wasn’t [a red card]. I can understand referees and officials on the pitch missing it even though my feeling was an instant red card because when your foot is studs showing and you’re five-and-a-half feet off the ground and make contact with a player’s head and draw blood, and there is a gash, I think it ticks all the boxes.

“Probably more so an experienced referee in the VAR room, you want him to help the official on the pitch in that moment. Listen, it’s decided the game because that player on the pitch shouldn’t have been on there at the end. I’m pretty sure most football people’s opinions will probably feel the same.”

Liverpool forward Luis Diaz has assured fans he is hopeful of returning to action in the coming weeks.

The Colombian international hasn’t played competitively since October due to a knee injury, but manager Jurgen Klopp has allowed Diaz to resume light training on the grass.

Due to a calf injury, the Portuguese attacker has been sidelined since mid-February, missing 21 Liverpool matches during that time.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has stated that new recruit Cody Gakpo will most likely play on the left side of a front three but has praised the 23-year-old’s versatility in filling a variety of offensive positions if necessary.

Gakpo, who had an outstanding 18 months at PSV Eindhoven and most recently shined for the Netherlands at the World Cup, has now signed a deal with the Reds worth up to £50 million.

Manchester United had been leading the chase, but Liverpool ended up beating their Premier League rivals to what could end up being one of the biggest deals this January.

“He’s a really, really good player so the package is really interesting. That’s why we were very interested to get him in and I’m really happy we could do it,” Klopp said at a press conference on Thursday, adding that it was a ‘great day’ for all involved.

The Liverpool boss was also pleased that there wasn’t so much as a sniff of the deal publicly until it was all but over the line.

The Reds signed Luis Diaz this time last year to play on the left, then allowed Sadio Mane to head to Bayern Munich in the summer. But the Colombian has spent much of the season sidelined through injury, with fellow forward Diogo Jota also unavailable.

Klopp insisted that the decision to sign Gakpo was not influenced by the absences of Diaz and Jota, stressing the decision to recruit was made some time ago. The only influential factor in that sense, he said, might have been the decision to do it now rather than wait until the summer.

“We decided to do something from the sports point of view without having a green light from the financial side two or three months ago. In the end because we did it early, it might have been influenced,” the boss commented.
