Arsenal’s David Raya has emphasized that his relationship with teammate Aaron Ramsdale remains “really good,” despite Raya securing the starting goalkeeper position this season.

Arsenal initially signed Raya on loan from Brentford in August, and it’s understood that the club intends to make the deal permanent. After initially being on the bench for three matches before the season’s first international break, Raya has since started every Premier League game he’s been eligible for, as well as five of Arsenal’s six Champions League group stage fixtures.

Raya’s ascent to the starting role has meant Ramsdale, who was voted into the 2022/23 PFA Team of the Year, has seen a reduction in playing time and has been linked with a potential move away in search of regular minutes. Despite the competition for the starting spot, Raya affirms that his relationship with Ramsdale remains strong.

Speaking to Arsenal’s website, Raya said he gets along well with Ramsdale, but ultimately his focus is on helping the club achieve their goals.

“It’s a big thing when another goalie comes to a club,” Raya said. “Aaron had a magnificent season last year so I’m just here to help the team to win the games when the gaffer puts me in.

“My relationship with Aaron is really good. We’re teammates and try to make each other better in every single session. We don’t try to hear what the outside world is saying, just focus on the team.

“I don’t believe in rotating goalkeepers, it’s a lack of clarity of the hierarchy,” he told beIN Sports.

“That doesn’t work unless the hierarchy exists until you say ‘look it’s two or three bad performances and now it’s a change and I give a chance to the other one’. The hierarchy has to be clear.

“On the other hand, when you’re in this position, it happened to me many times, you have a good team and you want to improve it. You look and think ‘what can I improve?’ Maybe the distribution from the back.

“It happened to me with the centre-backs, you want the guy who has better distribution from the back. And then you realise he is less good defensively and his first job is to defend.”

Asked which goalkeeper he would choose for his team, Wenger declined to make a decision but offered his support to Ramsdale.

“Personally I like Ramsdale,” he said. “If I was in his position, I would not give up because I believe he has a chance to come back into the team.

“[Is Ramsdale] better? I don’t know. I just think Ramsdale has made decisive saves in the games last season. They were not happy maybe with his feet.”

Though he has kept five of a possible nine clean sheets, Raya’s tenure as Arsenal’s starting goalkeeper has been uneventful. In some games, he has failed to inspire trust.

We are aware that Ramsdale is content to battle for his future at the Emirates for the time being, but with Chelsea and other teams keeping an eye on things, he could have to reevaluate his options at the conclusion of the year.

I felt so much better when I started training with him and in the space of six months, he changed my vision of a goalkeeper and the way I played back at Blackburn to how I played at Brentford. He was the first one to change my mindset to see different aspects of goalkeeping.

“I can’t wait to be out there training with the lads and getting that GK union going. That’s a tight group that we’re always going to get along and push each other, so that’s going to be a healthy group in my opinion. I just can’t wait to get going and meet the lads.

“One of the challenges is to get used to the style and the patterns, and get to know the players as soon as possible to get that bond from the beginning. Knowing the players and the staff, I think they’re going to put me in the right direction and I’ll fit in straight away.”

The Gunners allowed previous deputy Matt Turner to join Nottingham Forest earlier this month, and Raya has now taken his spot.

A small loan fee has been paid and according to reports Arsenal also have the option to buy Raya permanently for a total package of £30m.

According to reports, Tottenham Hotspur has agreed to pay Empoli’s €20 million asking price for goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

Although they were eager to get David Raya from Brentford, Spurs were unwilling to meet the Bees’ £40 million asking price and instead switched their attention to Italian international Vicario.

Sources have confirmed that Spurs are willing to negotiate a trade at that price. Empoli has requested a cost of €20m to part ways with its goalkeeper, who joined them permanently last summer and maintained seven clean sheets in 31 Serie A games.

Numerous Italian teams have been keeping an eye on Vicario, with Inter once considered the front-runners to sign the 26-year-old as a replacement for Andre Onana, who is in high demand, but Spurs have acted swiftly to try and fight off the competition.

Vicario, who is reportedly prepared to go to England this summer, has already spoken with Spurs.

Hugo Lloris has one year left on his contract but has stated he plans to depart Spurs in the upcoming weeks, so Vicario is now anticipated to replace him.

Hugo Lloris suffers significant injury in blow to Tottenham’s season.

Due to a knee injury, Hugo Lloris may be out of play for the next eight weeks.

The Tottenham captain sustained the problem during their hard-earned 1-0 win at home to Premier League champions Manchester City on Sunday.
