The Cavemen is on the mission of highlife genre restoration and its back on a steroid.

Highlife is back, and this time it is refined, rebranded in quality form, The Cavemen is on the mission of restoring the almost lost or forgotten genre and brought highlife back on a steroid.

Highlife is a music genre that began in present-day Ghana in the 19th century, in the time of a colony of the British Empire, It uses the melody and rhythmic structures of cultural Akan music, but played with Western instrumentals.

The Cavemen

Highlife gained recognition among the eastern people of Nigeria during the world war, as they combined and finetune it with their established music forming a contemporary musical genre known as Igbo highlife.

The Cavemen

Highlife is a special genre that needs to evolve, we all grew up listening to particular highlife artists like Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe, Oliver De Coque, Chief Dr Prince Morocco Maduka, Oriental Brothers, Dr Sir Warrior, Prince Nico Mbarga.

‘Roots’ Album revolves around the significant things in life such as happiness, love, and unpredictability of reality, easily connected to the roots and brawl of mankind, it is a sound with deep roots in the narrative of African music.

Highlife is back, and this time its refined, rebranded in quality form, The Cavemen is on the mission of restoring almost lost or forgotten genre.

Highlife is a music genre that began in present-day Ghana in the 19th century, in the time of a colony of the British Empire, It uses the melody and rhythmic structures of cultural Akan music, but played with Western instrumentals.

The Cavemen was officially created in 2018, the duo has sharpened the highlife genre by playing with esteemed popular artists such as Onyeka Onwenu, Asa, Bez, and alte star Lady Donli.

They Refined the usual highlife with infused modern elements, Sang in Igbo and Pidgin English to foster the grassroots reach, simply the modern ringleaders for highlife music.

All tracks in the ‘Roots’ Album are highly rich with sounds and lyrical depth.

The ability to interpret and connect each track on a live band makes it quite uncommon and special, they are actually underrated and deserve more accolades.

Nigerians and the world are unconsciously responsive-without persuasions to the highlife sound, especially for those that appreciate the purest form of sounds and the knowledge of the genre.

The movement has already begun as they are gradually gaining recognition across the nation and beyond.

OK, maybe we can’t just say she’s the best, but it shouldn’t cause any argument when I say she’s one of the bests, in Nigeria, Africa, anywhere.

The beautiful singer, formerly Simisola Bolatito Ogunleye is currently on a honeymoon with her husband in South Africa. You heard it right. Plus they just recently released a song, ‘Promise‘ to commemorate their marital union.

Her voice is magical, and she’s our Beyonce, or maybe it’s RiRi? Whichever. She’s been consistently giving us hits, and proving to us that she’s in fact, a very talented artist. And, since 2014 till date, she’s been on a roll.

You remember “Tiff“? That was her breakthrough single, that introduced her to the industry, and brought her to the mainstream. Way back in 2014 (been quite a while, too.)

But then Simi’s always been a whiz kid (pun intended, maybe), writing songs from a tender age. Now, it’s paying off.

In this edition of Mp3bullet’s “Facts You Don’t Know” series, here are seven things I think you probably don’t know about the songstress, Simi. Let’s get at it real quick!

WAS A GOSPEL SINGER

Simi broke out in 2014, but a couple years before that, she was popular. Only that she was a young gospel singer then.

In 2008, she dropped an album “Ogaju,” and her single “Ara Ile” became an instant hit.

You probably heard the song “Ara Ile” then, you can still remember how tiny the voice of the girl singing it was? Well, that was Simi. She was actually 20, then.

LAS GIDI BABE

Don’t think it too much, Simisola, is a real Lagos girl. No wonder she understands the Owanbe thing.

Born in Ojuelegba (did your mind say Wizkid, just now?), she also had her secondary Education, somewhere in Ikorodu.

I hope you know, you can’t live in Lagos, and not be sharp. Simi might sound so innocent, but she’s probably badder than you think (oh, yeah, in a good way!)

COVENANT UNIVERSITY ALUMNI

Covenant is renowned to be one of the universities in Nigeria, with the strictest policies. But why are the best vocalists always from Covenant, tho?

Bez, Ric Hassani, Nonso, and yeah… Simi! Simi graduated from the Living Faith Church-owned Covenant University, with a degree in Mass Communication. She too go school oh.

5 HEADIES

Not all artists in this industry can boast of five Headies plaques. Artists like Burna boy, Yung6ix, Lil Kesh, don’t even have one. But you’ll be surprised that the slim babe, Simi has five!

In 2015, she won two, of which one (Best Collabo) was for the remix of “Jamb Question,” which featured Falz. She’s gone on to win three more.

She’s also won 3 City People Awards, 1 AFRIMA, and 1 NEA. Simi’s got the recognition, after all.

BILLBOARD TOP 5

She doesn’t only have the recognition, she has the numbers. And as Adekunle Gold said on Ariwo Ko; “Numbers don’t lie!”

When her sophomore album, “Simisola” arrived September, last year, it quickly raked in the numbers. And it debuted on number five of the Billboard World Albums Chart. Some other Nigerian artists that have go that close? Wizkid, Olamide, Reminisce.

PRAIZ LABEL-MATE

Simi has been signed to X3M Music, since God knows when. And her album “Simisola” was released under the imprint.

But probably ’cause X3M isn’t like YBNL or Mavins, where artists are steady repping the label and doing collabos together, a lot of people don’t really know she’s label mate with popular “Rich & Famous” singer, Praiz.

They actually have a collabo together, “Outta My Head!”

CHEMISTRY

Now, it’s Stew. But there really was a time when Chemistry was Trending, seriously. At that time, there were speculations that Simi was in a romantic relationship with frequent collaborator, Falz.

They dropped a joint EP, in October 2016 called “Chemistry,” and it was all over the place.

She’s gone on to have a good chemistry with Adekunle Gold, too. And at a time we were wondering, who was really dating the singer? It’s actually none of our business.

Thank God, it’s been clarified now. We can even say the winner is….ADEKUNLE GOLD.

The duo left Nigerians panting for their wedding pictures as they kept their words as regards having a secret wedding with only 300 people in attendance. Phew! I wonder how they did it.

There are rumours that the singer is currently expecting her first child with Gold, and so the reason for their quiet wedding. However, they are just speculations that are yet to be confirmed.

SOUND ENGINEER

It’s not every day, you see a female artist that doubles up as a producer or sound engineer.

Simi is a sound engineer, though, and she’s been recognized for her works on Adekunle Gold’s “About 30” album, which she mixed and mastered.

Simi’s a Queen, too. Right?

Sound Sultan & Bez

“Everyday” is a story of threes that draws several parallels with the Nigerian State. It’s a story of three friends who hoped for a better life, a story of betrayal, and a story that speaks to how there should come a time when people get tired of the status quo.

It highlights the dangers of being a complacent people and speaks to the need to take one’s future into one’s own hands as opposed to leaving it in the hands of those who would squander it. I find this to be true especially on this day – Democracy Day, when we are reminded of our young democracy and how much we have been through as a people to get to where we are now.

As we prepare to cast our votes next year and decide our future, “Everyday” calls on us to reject complacency and do something. It is time we leave that space of taking things as they are, and get to that point where sidon look is no longer acceptable. It doesn’t make sense that the hardworking Nigerian youth should continue to slave away with little or no guarantee of a future.

Finally, I wish that we would recognize and exercise our power to choose so that we can shape our collective future into that which we desire. Special thanks to my brothers Sound Sultan and Bez, outstanding and conscientious musicians in their own right who lent their voices to this song. “Everyday” is a song for the people. “Everyday” is a song for you.
