Renowned Nigerian singer-songwriter Bukola Elemide, popularly known as Aṣa, has been selected as a 2025 Yale World Fellow, joining an exclusive network of global changemakers.

The Yale World Fellows programme is a flagship initiative of Yale University’s International Leadership Center, designed to nurture leadership and broaden global perspectives.

Each year, 16 outstanding individuals from various fields are selected from thousands of applicants to participate in an intensive four-month experience at Yale.

Since its inception in 2002, the programme has welcomed over 400 Fellows from 101 countries, drawing professionals from politics, media, international development, and justice.

Emma Sky, Director of Yale’s International Leadership Centre, praised the new cohort, stating:

Nigeria’s most prestigious music awards, The Headies, has officially set the stage for its 17th edition with the release of its highly anticipated nominations list on February 12, 2025.

Because of the tonal beauty and musicality of singing in Yoruba, it feels very personal, yet it also resonates with everyone. However, in terms of breaking through and reaching a wider audience, English is the global language,” Aṣa explained.

Having grown up in Oyo State, Nigeria, before moving to France at a young age, Aṣa discussed how her dual heritage influences her music. She noted that her Nigerian background keeps her rooted in African culture, while her French connection helps her reach a global audience.

The multi-award-winning singer, whose 2008 self-titled album won the Headies Album of the Year prize, shared her approach to making music. “I always allow for that space when I’m making music. Veteran singer Bukola Elemide, professionally known as Asa has reacted to reports of violence and tribalism that took place during the presidential and national assembly elections in some communities of Lagos State.

The numerous reports of attacks on voters have gotten people questioning the credibility of INEC’s results.

There have been claims that thugs messed with the actual election on February 25 2023, by destroying ballots and even seizing people’s phones to prevent them from recording.

Remember that there have been several internet comments that are tribal and discriminatory during the voting process. Some internet posts also made the assertion that some voters had experienced physical assault at various polling locations.
