“Saying ‘Your Time Don Pass’ Sounds Is Like Brain Damage” — Terry G urges respect for music OGs

Nigerian singer and music producer Terry G has called out the widespread culture of dismissing veteran artists, describing the attitude as not only disrespectful but deeply harmful to the growth of the music industry.
In a recent public statement, the Free Madness crooner questioned why Nigerian society is quick to tell older musicians that their time has passed, unlike in the West, where musical legends continue to receive admiration well into their later years.
“I hear people say, ‘Your time don pass!’—and it sounds like brain damage,” Terry G said, taking aim at the short-term memory often shown toward legacy artists in Nigeria.
He contrasted the mindset with global reverence for long-standing icons like Jay-Z and Beyoncé, who continue to receive praise for their decades of influence.
“But here in Africa, especially Nigeria, we’re quick to discard our own. That’s why we believe our ancestors were evil, while Western ancestors are seen as gods. It’s time to break free from that mindset,” he added.
Terry G went further to stress that relevance in the entertainment space isn’t just about age but about continuous personal development and impact.
“If you don’t keep adding value to yourself and those around you, your worth will fade—no matter how great you once were. We must do better.”
His message has sparked an online conversation about how Nigerian society treats its musical pioneers, with many echoing his sentiments and calling for a cultural shift that recognizes the contributions of older artists instead of sidelining them.
For Terry G, the issue runs deeper than entertainment; it’s a reflection of how African society often undervalues legacy, history, and longevity.

In the West, legends are respected for life. No one calls jayz or Beyoncé outdated. Their impact is honored.
