What I saw was heartbreaking – Small Doctor cries out as he speaks on high rate of substance use among youths
Nigerian street-pop singer Adekunle Temitope, popularly known as Small Doctor, has expressed deep concern over the alarming rise in substance abuse among young people in Nigerian communities.
Taking to his official X (formerly Twitter) account, the “Account Balance” hitmaker recounted a recent walk through his neighborhood, where he witnessed several troubling scenes of youth struggling with drug addiction. He described the experience as “heartbreaking.”
“The rate young chaps use drugs nowadays is alarming,” he wrote.
Small Doctor also reflected on a conversation he had six years ago with Fuji music legend Wasiu Ayinde (K1 De Ultimate), who had advised him to consider setting up a rehabilitation centre, predicting it would become not only necessary but a “new oil” due to the rising drug crisis.
“That man saw the future,” he added, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
The singer lamented seeing some of his once-promising peers visibly deteriorated, with some “sleeping while standing” and others in “crazy postures” due to substance use.
He also called for the return of a content creator known for anti-drug advocacy, possibly named “David,” whose impactful messages he believes are needed now more than ever.
This statement from Small Doctor adds to the growing chorus of voices in Nigerian entertainment calling for greater awareness, intervention, and support systems to tackle the country’s growing substance abuse problem—especially among the youth.
