Each year, the world waits to see who will earn GQ’s coveted “Man of the Year” title, a recognition reserved for those shaping culture in bold and lasting ways.

From Anthony Joshua to David Beckham, Jared Leto, and Paul Mescal, the list has always celebrated icons who push boundaries. But this year’s British GQ edition takes it a step further for its first-ever “Men of the Year” issue; the spotlight lands on Skepta, and honestly, no one deserves it more.

As part of GQ’s 2025 feature, “The People Who Shaped Culture,” Skepta stands alongside other creative heavyweights like Lewis Capaldi, Jack O’Connell, and Tom Hiddleston. Yet, what makes his moment special is that it captures Skepta at a different stage of life, one focused on legacy.

At 43, Joseph Junior Adenuga, better known as Skepta, has evolved from a grime trailblazer to a full-blown British cultural institution.

The Tottenham-born rapper, producer, and designer has spent over two decades shaping how the world sees and hears British creativity.

From his explosive early grime anthems like “Shutdown” and “That’s Not Me” to the global rise of his fashion brand Mains, Skepta has never just followed trends he’s built them. His artistry has always been bigger than music; it’s about identity, influence, and empowerment.

And while some veterans cling to their status, Skepta’s mindset has always been about giving back. One of his favorite sayings and once his phone wallpaper — reads:

“The meaning of life is to make it easier for the next generation.”

It’s not just a quote; it’s how he lives. Whether through his Big Smoke Festival in South London, a platform merging global stars with underground talent, or his open support for young creatives, Skepta continues to dismantle outdated ideas of gatekeeping.

    As he put it best:

“Old people are always gonna be old people. There ain’t no gatekeepers. Whoever thinks they’re a gatekeeper needs to look again at that gate.”

From grime pioneer to global visionary, Skepta’s recognition as British GQ’s first-ever Man of the Year feels less like an award and more like a well-earned chapter in a legacy that’s still unfolding.
