Sir Alex Ferguson leaves Manchester United by mutual consent
Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is set to step down from his ambassadorial role at the end of the current 2024/25 season.
According to The Telegraph, this decision is part of the club’s cost-cutting measures aimed at balancing their financial records, as INEOS continues its cost-reduction program by ending its financial commitment to Ferguson, the club’s most successful manager.
Although Sir Alex has served as a director on the club’s football board, his role has been primarily ceremonial, similar to those held by other club legends, including Sir Bobby Charlton and former chief executive David Gill.
Notably, Ferguson is not part of the official board, which includes the six Glazer siblings, INEOS co-owner John Reece, INEOS Sport’s chairman Rob Nevin, and independent directors Robert Leitao and John Hooks.
Reports indicate that his departure was amicable, following a direct conversation between Ferguson and co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, and he will always be welcomed back at Old Trafford.
During his illustrious tenure at Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson won a remarkable total of 38 trophies, which included:
13 Premier League titles
2 UEFA Champions League titles
5 FA Cups
4 League Cups
10 Community Shields
1 FIFA Club World Cup
1 UEFA Super Cup
1 Intercontinental Cup
Ferguson’s legacy at the club is unparalleled, making him a legendary figure in football history.
