Simi opens up on how she avoided heartbreak before getting married

Nigerian singer-songwriter Simi has shared personal insights into how she’s managed to avoid heartbreak in her romantic life before marrying fellow artist Adekunle Gold.
In a candid conversation with media personality VJ Adams, the Duduke crooner revealed that while she’s felt emotional pain, she’s never experienced what she considers a true heartbreak.
“I don’t think I’ve ever been heartbroken, but I’ve been hurt before,” Simi shared. “I don’t have any memory of being heartbroken, but I’ve probably broken someone’s heart though.”
She explained that her approach to relationships is shaped by her strong sense of self-worth and emotional boundaries. Rather than staying in situations that make her feel unwanted or pitied, Simi said she always chose to walk away early.
“I’m the type of person who used to say I never wanted someone to date me out of pity. If I feel bad, I’ll get over it—but I won’t stay in a space where I’m not valued,” she added.
According to Simi, this mindset applies not only to romantic relationships but also to friendships and anyone she deeply cares about.
“Even with friendships—if someone makes me feel unsafe, I’ll cut it off. I have anxiety. I don’t like being around people who make me feel like I’m not emotionally secure.”
Her reflections highlight the importance of emotional self-awareness and setting healthy boundaries, especially in a world where many people struggle with toxic dynamics and codependency.
“When you love people, there’s always the capacity for them to hurt you. But I’ve always chosen to protect my peace.”
