Burna Boy and Sidhu Moose Wala’s posthumous hit on YouTube sets a record.
Damini Ogulu, better known as Burna Boy, has broken a new YouTube record after appearing as a guest artist on Sidhu Moose Wala’s posthumous hit ‘Mera Na.‘
A posthumous record called “Mera Na” was published on April 7th, 2023, in memory of Punjabi rapper, singer, and songwriter Sidhu Moose Wala, who was shot and died in May 2022.
Burna Boy, a close friend of the late Indian musician, paid tribute to him after his passing and also performed on his posthumous album.
Burna Boy was one of the few artists that Sidhu had expressed a desire to collaborate with before his untimely death.
The song, which was released on April 7th, 2023, became an instant smash, receiving over 14.9 million views, over 2 million “likes,” and over one million comments in just 24 hours on YouTube.
This new record makes Burna Boy own the record for the most YouTube streams in the opening 24 hours of a release by a Nigerian artist.
The song video, which Navkaran Brar directed and edited, depicts Sidhu’s enormous popularity and how his supporters continue to pay tribute to him.
The Canadian rapper Drake can also be seen in the video wearing a T-shirt with Sidhu’s image emblazoned on it.
The video had nearly 1.2 million comments and 20.4 million views as of the time of writing.
On May 29, 2022, Moose Wala—whose actual name was Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu—was shot while driving a car in the Mansa district of Punjab state, northern India. After being transported to the hospital, the 28-year-old was pronounced dead.
The homicide was the consequence of an inter-gang dispute, the Punjab police in India claimed after the preliminary inquiry.
A successful song in 2017 launched Moose Wala’s singing career, launching him to fame among the Indian and Punjabi diaspora in places like the UK and Canada. His music fuses hip-hop, rap, and folk.
