‘I knew this was love’ – Craig David talks about song collaboration with Tiwa Savage
British R&B icon Craig David has opened up about his collaboration with Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Tiwa Savage on his latest track, “Commitment.”
The 7 Days hitmaker couldn’t stop praising Tiwa, calling her a “consistent and talented force” in the music industry.
During a recent interview on the Capital Xtra podcast, the 43-year-old, award-winning singer reflected on how Tiwa Savage, 45, became part of the song.
Commitment was already 70% complete when Craig and his team started discussing who could bring the perfect finishing touch. That’s when Tiwa’s name came up—and the choice was unanimous.
“We were in the studio brainstorming, and someone said, ‘What about Tiwa Savage?’” Craig recalled. “I was like, ‘That’s a great idea!’”
Initially unsure if she’d be interested, Craig reached out, and to his surprise, Tiwa responded with enthusiasm.
“She got back to us so graciously,” he said. “She even told me, ‘Even if the song wasn’t that great, I still would have jumped on it.’ That’s when I knew this was love.”
Once Tiwa added her magic, the song took on a whole new life.
“She jumped on the track, and next thing you know, we had this incredible song that blended both of our worlds seamlessly,” Craig said. “It went from fire emojis to voice notes. And those ad-libs? Next level. We were both gassed!”
Craig also shared his admiration for Tiwa’s longevity and vocal prowess, declaring himself a longtime fan.
“When it comes to Afrobeats, she’s been holding it down for years. She’s not just consistent—she’s an outstanding vocalist,” he said.
Meeting Tiwa in person was just as special for Craig, who described the experience as “everything I could’ve imagined and more.”
“She’s so gracious, and her talent is unreal,” he added. “She was like, ‘Yeah, it’s good stuff,’ and I’m thinking, ‘No, YOU’RE the good stuff!’”
