Afrobeat musician and activist Seun Kuti has stirred fresh debate with his explosive claims about the forces allegedly behind the controversial arrest of social media critic VeryDarkMan (VDM).
According to Kuti, powerful religious figures and financial institutions, particularly GTBank, are using their influence to suppress dissent and silence critics.
In his statement, Seun Kuti cited his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju—who is also representing VDM—as his source of information. He disclosed that he is currently pursuing legal action against GTBank and other Nigerian banks, adding: “To me, there’s no good bank in Nigeria.”
Kuti didn’t mince words when implicating top religious leaders: “As the Federal Government runs Nigeria, these big pastors run it too… It’s the so-called people of God that are fighting VeryDarkMan for telling the truth.”
This sharp critique reflects a growing concern among activists and netizens about the alleged collaboration between elite religious institutions and corporate interests to muzzle outspoken figures like VDM.
VDM’s arrest by the EFCC remains shrouded in mystery, with little official explanation.
The rumored involvement of gospel singer Mercy Chinwo and her legal battle with Eezee Tee, though still unconfirmed, has only added to the cloud of speculation and online agitation.
Kuti’s comments have fueled further scrutiny of the Nigerian justice system, the influence of megachurches, and the opaque power dynamics operating behind high-profile detentions.
