‘How family lost cancer patient, $250K after trusting ‘pastor’—Seun Kuti Recounts Disturbing Cancer Story, Ignites Online Debate

Controversial Nigerian singer and activist Seun Kuti has stirred fresh debate online after recounting a disturbing story of a family who allegedly lost a loved one after choosing faith-based intervention over medical care for a cancer diagnosis.
The Afrobeat star shared the account in a video making the rounds on social media, using the story to criticise what he described as blind religious belief in the face of serious medical conditions.
According to Seun Kuti, the unnamed woman had reportedly been diagnosed with cancer abroad, where doctors allegedly informed her family that nothing more could be done and advised them to prepare for the worst.
However, the family was said to have rejected that outcome and turned to spiritual solutions instead.
Recounting the incident in his words, Seun said:
”Oyibo don tell am say nothing can be done, get comfortable; it’s your time. But the woman no wan d!e na. Na Nigerian rich woman. She too hold bar. Na him dey come Nigeria, Adeboye will heal her. Dem go collect place for Redeem Camp. Adeboye pray finish..the woman come d!e inside redeem camp, the woman’s family couldn’t believe it,” he stated.
Seun further alleged that after the woman passed away, the family was reportedly told that she could still be brought back to life through prayer. He claimed the family continued to hope for a miracle, despite the growing emotional and financial strain.
Continuing his narration, the singer added:
“Na him dey carry her body go inside Adeboye place for Redeem Camp. This was after $250,000 don go down. Adeboye came out of his balcony, he didn’t even come down to meet them. He told them to stop crying. He will go inside to pray for her to wake up. As he pray for one hour she no wake up, e say na God call am, make them dey go house,” he added.
According to Seun Kuti, all efforts to revive the woman allegedly failed, leaving the family to bear what he described as heavy financial losses alongside the pain of losing their loved one.
The singer’s comments have since sparked intense reactions online, with many Nigerians divided over the role of faith in medical emergencies.
While some agreed with Seun’s criticism of religious extremism, others accused him of attacking Christianity and questioned the accuracy of the claims.
As with similar past statements from Seun Kuti, the story has reignited wider conversations around religion, healthcare decisions, and accountability within faith-based institutions in Nigeria.
