“I don’t know how to wash anything” – Seun Kuti Speaks on his childhood
Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti recently opened up about his childhood and the special bond he shared with his legendary father, Fela Kuti.
During an appearance on the ‘Zero Conditions’ podcast, Seun described how he received preferential treatment from his father, whom he considers his favorite person in the world.
He acknowledged that while his siblings might have different perspectives on their father’s parenting, he personally felt that Fela was an amazing dad.
Reflecting on his upbringing, Seun revealed, “I won the daddy lottery. Fela Kuti is my favorite person in the world. If you asked my brothers, they could say he’s a terrible dad, but to me, he was an amazing father.”
He also shared how pampered he was as a child, stating, “You don’t know how spoilt I was growing up. Till now, I have never done laundry in my life. I don’t know how to wash anything. I’m not bragging.”
Seun Kuti’s musical journey began early, as he joined his father’s band, Egypt 80, at the tender age of 8. He continued to lead the band after Fela’s passing, with the support of his family. “I have been with Fela’s Egypt 80 band since I was 8 years old. So when Fela died, my family asked me to continue with the band and keep all the money I make,” he shared.
Seun’s reflections offer a glimpse into his unique upbringing and the strong influence his father had on both his personal and professional life.
