Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti, the son of legendary singer and activist Fela Anikulapo Kuti, has once again stirred online conversation after openly declaring that he does not believe in prayer.

The outspoken artist made the remarks in a video that has since circulated widely on social media, where he shared his personal views on spirituality and religious practices. Known for challenging conventional beliefs, Seun explained that traditional forms of prayer have never resonated with him.

According to the singer, public displays of worship often appear performative rather than meaningful. He argued that actions such as kneeling, rolling on the ground, or loudly proclaiming faith feel more like “eye service” than genuine spiritual engagement.

Seun went further to reveal that prayer, as commonly practised, has never been part of his life. Instead, he described spirituality as a deeply personal journey that should be reflected through how one lives, rather than outward rituals.

“I have never prayed before in my life, I don’t believe it works. All this eye service wey Una dey do, wey Una go go kneel down for ground, dey roll for ground, dey shout, they’re all childishness. Your life is the prayer. What you do with your life is the prayer,” he stated.

The comments have since sparked mixed reactions, with some social media users applauding his honesty and philosophical stance. In contrast, others strongly disagreed, defending prayer as a central part of faith and spiritual discipline.

Seun Kuti, who has consistently used his platform to question religion, politics, and social structures, remains one of Nigeria’s most controversial cultural voices. As expected, his latest remarks have reignited debates around faith, spirituality, and the role of religion in modern society.

“I’ve never prayed before in my life, I don’t believe it works, Praying is childish. It doesn’t work.”
