Seun Kuti reveals he’s a traditional worshipper in recent interview
Nigerian artist Seun Kuti has revealed his unconventional spiritual beliefs, stating that he does not attend church and actively practices voodoo, commonly known as ‘juju.’
Speaking in an interview on the latest episode of ‘Spill With Phyna’ on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, the son of the late Afrobeat icon, Fela Kuti, discussed his family’s historical ties to Christianity in Nigeria, specifically with the Anglican denomination.
Despite his family’s significant role in starting the Anglican side of Christianity in Nigeria, Kuti shared that over time, they have shifted away from following the Christian faith. In the interview, the 41-year-old musician expressed his desire for Africans to reconsider their spiritual beliefs in a new light.
When asked about his own religious practices, Seun Kuti openly stated that he follows ‘juju,’ offering a unique perspective on spirituality. This revelation provides an interesting angle to how people perceive the Grammy-nominated artist, who is known not only for his music but also for speaking out on various societal matters.
Seun Kuti’s openness about his spiritual beliefs adds depth to the ongoing conversation about diverse perspectives on religion and spirituality in Africa.
