Seun Kuti blasts GTB London over ‘Ridiculous’ account requirements
Afrobeat superstar Seun Kuti recently voiced his outrage and disappointment after being denied the opportunity to open a bank account at Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) in London.
Kuti revealed that he attempted to open an account with £10,000, only to be informed that the minimum required amount was £50,000, approximately ₦106 million.
Kuti, known for his activism, criticized the bank’s high demands, particularly given Nigeria’s economic situation. He shared how the incident left him feeling embarrassed as he walked out of the bank with his manager and a friend, who laughed at him for thinking that £10,000 would be sufficient to open a foreign account.
This experience has sparked controversy online, with many Nigerians taking to social media to express their frustrations with the banking system, particularly the challenges faced when dealing with foreign banks.
Kuti’s story resonates with many who feel that such high financial demands are out of reach for the average person, further highlighting the growing inequality in financial access.

In other news, Seun Kuti has criticized the Nigerian government for its failure to invest in sports, particularly highlighting Nigeria’s poor performance in the 2024 Olympics.
In a video posted on his Instagram account, Kuti pointed out that Nigeria only participated in sports that required minimal financial investment, while neglecting those that needed more resources.
Kuti expressed his disappointment by saying, “I dey watch Olympic games; look at how poorly we performed. How many sports are we competing in? I saw that it was only sports that did not need investment that Nigerians participated in, like, it was the sports that needed minimum investment that we did.”
