Manchester United reject help seal quarter-final qualification for Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund’s victory over PSV Eindhoven secured their place in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, marking their first appearance in the last eight in three years.
In the second leg of the Round of 16 tie, Dortmund emerged victorious with a 2-0 win over PSV, sealing a 3-1 aggregate triumph. Jadon Sancho, currently on loan from Manchester United, opened the scoring for Dortmund with a well-placed shot that found the back of the net after passing through the legs of an Eindhoven player.
The first leg, held at PSV’s home ground, ended in a 1-1 draw, giving Dortmund the advantage heading into the return leg in Germany. Dortmund’s comprehensive 2-0 victory at home ensured their progression to the quarterfinals, eliminating the Dutch side from the competition.
Dortmund fielded a strong lineup for the decisive match, with Sancho notably starting his first Champions League home game for the club since December 2020. On the other hand, PSV manager Peter Bosz included midfielder Joey Veerman, who passed a late fitness test, in the starting lineup.
Throughout the game, Dortmund dominated proceedings, denying PSV any significant opportunities to threaten their lead. Sancho’s early goal put Dortmund in control, and despite PSV’s efforts to rally in the second half, they were unable to overturn the deficit.
In injury time, Dortmund capitalized on a defensive slip from PSV, with Marco Reus capitalizing on the mistake to secure Dortmund’s victory with a composed finish reminiscent of Demba Ba’s famous goal after Steven Gerrard’s slip. The goal sealed Dortmund’s place in the quarterfinals of the Champions League, marking a significant achievement for the German club.
