Chelsea agree £5m loan deal with Roma as Romelu Lukaku agrees to take pay cut.
After Chelsea agreed to a £5 million ($6 million) loan bid from Roma, Romelu Lukaku will reconnect with Jose Mourinho at the Italian club.
The Telegraph reports that Roma and Lukaku have reached a £5 million loan agreement. The Belgian striker has agreed to take a pay reduction so Chelsea won’t be responsible for any part of the £6 million ($8 million) salary he will receive in Rome.
After rejecting offers from Inter, Juventus, and Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal, it was starting to seem as though Lukaku will stay at Chelsea for the remainder of the current campaign. Chelsea was eager to offload the 30-year-old, but at least they won’t have to pay his salary for the remainder of the season anymore.
Lukaku will play for Mourinho in Italy, where he was a player under him at Manchester United. The striker, who Chelsea acquired from Inter in 2021 for £97.5 million ($135 million), had to consent to a further pay decrease should he decide to return to Chelsea after this campaign. His contract has three more years to run.
