Chelsea’s 21-year-old defensive talent, Renato Veiga, has officially joined Juventus on loan until the end of the 2024/25 season. The deal, which does not include an option or obligation to buy, marks a pivotal moment in Veiga’s career as he seeks more playing time and a chance to secure a spot in Portugal’s squad for the upcoming World Cup.
Juventus will cover Veiga’s wages in full and pay a loan fee of approximately £4.2 million (€3.8 million), with an additional £1.2 million (€1.5 million) in potential bonuses and £168,000 (€200,000) in extra costs. The agreement ensures Veiga will return to Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2025, allowing Chelsea to maintain control of his long-term future.

Unveiled on Monday night, Veiga will wear Juventus’ iconic number 12 shirt, previously donned by Brazilian defender Alex Sandro before his move to Flamengo last summer. Veiga’s versatility, physicality, and aerial prowess make him a valuable addition to the Italian giants as they compete in Serie A and the Champions League.
After signing for Chelsea from Basel for £12 million last summer, Veiga agreed to a seven-year contract with the Blues. However, his playing time at Stamford Bridge has been limited, with just 177 minutes of Premier League action this season. The young defender has demonstrated his versatility, playing as a central defender, left-back, and occasionally in midfield.
Before joining Chelsea, Veiga honed his skills at Sporting CP, rising through the youth ranks to the senior squad. His career trajectory then took him to Augsburg in the Bundesliga and later to Basel, where he became a standout performer. In his short time with Chelsea, he contributed two goals and one assist in the Conference League, showcasing his potential on the European stage.

In a glowing statement, Juventus expressed their excitement about Veiga’s arrival: “Juventus are delighted to welcome Portuguese defender Renato Veiga, who will join the Club on loan from Chelsea until the end of the 2024/25 season.
A versatile and physical player, who can also play as a midfielder but has played both left-back and as a central defender in England in recent months, Veiga is gifted with great athleticism, making him a threat on set pieces and in aerial duels.
Born and bred at Sporting CP, the 21-year-old rose through the capital club’s youth ranks, making it all the way up to the senior squad before going on to play in the Bundesliga at Augsburg in the 2022/23 season. After a year in Germany, a move to Basel followed, where he established himself as a key component of the Swiss club and attracted the attention of Premier League side Chelsea.
Bought by the Blues last summer, Veiga made a total of 18 appearances in the first half of the season, contributing two goals and one assist, all of which came in the Conference League. Now, however, a new chapter in Juventus colours begins, for a player who will guarantee new alternatives and options for the Juve technical staff in the coming months.
Welcome to Juventus, Renato!”

For Veiga, this move represents a golden opportunity to prove himself at one of Europe’s biggest clubs. With Juventus facing Benfica in the Champions League on Wednesday and hosting Empoli in Serie A on Saturday, Veiga could make his debut soon.
As the young defender embarks on this new chapter, all eyes will be on how he adapts to the demands of Serie A and contributes to Juventus’ campaign. For Chelsea, this loan spells a chance for Veiga to gain valuable experience before returning to West London as a more polished and confident player.
