Rolling Stone has unveiled its annual Top 100 Albums of the Year list, celebrating the global music projects that shaped 2024.
Among the honoured artists are Nigerian heavyweights Rema, Tems, Ayra Starr, and South Africa’s rising star Tyla, whose albums earned prominent spots on the prestigious chart.
Tyla’s self-titled album led the African contingent, landing an impressive No. 6 on the list—a remarkable feat for the young artist who has swept major awards this year, including the Grammys, MTV, and BET Awards.
Following closely, Rema’s ‘HEIS‘ secured the No. 11 spot, further cementing his status as a trailblazer in the Afrobeats scene.
Tems’ soulful album, Born in the Wild, earned the 37th position. It was lauded for its mesmerizing vocals and introspective songwriting.
Meanwhile, Ayra Starr’s ‘The Year I Turned 21‘ rounded out the Nigerian representation at No. 53, showcasing her vibrant energy and knack for blending Afro-RnB with youthful flair.
The recognition is more than a personal achievement for these artists; it signifies a monumental moment for African music on the global stage. Tyla’s dominance across award platforms, Rema’s innovative Afro-Rave experimentation, and the international appeal of Tems and Ayra Starr highlight the immense talent and creativity flourishing in African music today.
The ‘Top 10 Albums of 2024′ list was led by Charli XCX’s ‘Brat‘ at No. 1, followed by Beyoncé’s ‘Cowboy Carter’ and MJ Lenderman’s ‘Manning Fireworks.’ Other notable mentions include Billie Eilish’s ‘Hit Me Hard and Soft‘ and Ariana Grande’s ‘Eternal Sunshine.’
This year’s list reflects a diverse and dynamic year in music, with African artists continuing to push boundaries and gain recognition in global conversations.
