Afrobeats artist Rema has opened up about the motivation behind his early entry into the music industry. In an interview with Capital Xtra London, he shared that his mother’s hardship and poverty were the driving forces behind his determination to pursue a music career.

Rema recounted that his mother’s inability to afford transportation costs for her daily job deeply affected him. He said, “I was tired of my mum trekking every day; she didn’t even have money for transport to use a bus or bike. So I had to take it to the next level ASAP.”

His drive to succeed paid off, and once he began earning money, his first priority was to improve his mother’s situation. “The moment I made money, I got her a car ASAP. We went for dinner, then I gave her that car. A lot of boys would go for their own cars first, but I was still trekking. I had to get a car for my mum first,” he revealed.

Rema emphasized the significant role his mother played in his success, attributing his achievements to her support and prayers. “She’s a great mum. She’s the reason I’m successful. Her prayers. She’s really proud of me,” he added.

In other news, Rema has achieved another milestone in his illustrious career, setting a new record for the biggest opening week on Spotify Nigeria with his latest album, ‘HEIS‘.

The album garnered an impressive 12.3 million streams, surpassing Olamide’s ‘Ikigai‘ which had 7.92 million streams in its opening week. This feat solidifies Rema’s position as a leading artist in the global exportation of Nigerian music.
