On November 14, 2023, Nigerian superstar Rema achieved a significant milestone by selling out the renowned O2 Arena in a landmark concert. The event marked the culmination of a remarkable year for the Nigerian artist, highlighted by the global success of his hit single ‘Calm Down.‘

However, Rema’s O2 Arena show also sparked reactions from some concertgoers who found elements of his clothing and stage props to carry perceived demonic undertones. The artist made a dramatic entrance riding on a horse, adorned in a black flowing robe and a red mask.

He later made a second grand entrance, this time riding on the back of a huge bat with red eyes.

These fashion choices and stage designs reignited conversations about satanic imagery in Rema’s artistic interpretations. Despite claims of satanism, Rema, a self-proclaimed Christian, has previously dismissed such accusations.

In response to the controversy, Rema took to his X (formerly Twitter) account to share the inspiration behind the horse and mask used in his O2 concert.

He explained that the decision was influenced by Edo culture, particularly the awe-inspiring arts that were taken away by the British during the invasion of 1897. These artifacts are currently housed in the London Museum, far from the Bini Kingdom, where they originated.

Rema clarified that the horse he rode symbolizes Edo art, and the mask is fashioned after that of the great Edo monarch Queen Idia.

While Rema’s artistic approach has consistently incorporated esoteric elements, some fans familiar with his avant-garde style may not interpret it as dark arts. However, the controversy highlights the subjective nature of artistic expression and its interpretation by diverse audiences.
