Trace Awards 2025: Rema, Burna Boy, Ayra Starr lead nominations
The Trace Awards 2025, one of Africa’s most prestigious music award ceremonies, has unveiled its nominees, with Nigerian Afrobeats stars Rema, Burna Boy, and Ayra Starr leading the pack.
Scheduled for February 26, 2025, in Zanzibar, the event promises to be a grand celebration of African and diaspora talent, recognizing excellence across various genres and categories.
Rema, the young sensation redefining Afrobeats, stands tall with six nominations. These include ‘Song of the Year,’ ‘Album of the Year,’ ‘Best Collaboration,’ ‘Best Music Video,’ ‘Best Global African Artist,’ and ‘Best Male Artist.’ Known for his genre-blending sound and captivating visuals, Rema has become a global icon, earning widespread acclaim for his chart-topping hits.
Matching Rema’s nomination count is Burna Boy, famously dubbed the African Giant. With six nods in categories such as ‘Album of the Year,’ ‘Song of the Year,’ ‘Best Live Performance,’ ‘Best Collaboration,’ ‘Best Male Artist,’ and ‘Best Global African Artist,’ Burna Boy continues to cement his legacy. His powerful lyrics, electrifying performances, and genre-defying music have positioned him as a towering figure in African music.
Not far behind is Afropop queen Ayra Starr, who has earned five nominations. She is in contention for ‘Best Female Artist,’ ‘Best Global African Artist,’ ‘Best Artist (Western Africa Anglophone),’ ‘Best Live Performance,’ and ‘Best Music Video.’ Ayra’s artistry, versatility, and ability to captivate audiences worldwide have made her one of the most exciting voices in contemporary African music.
Other prominent nominees include Nigerian hitmaker Asake, Tanzanian superstar Diamond Platnumz, Ghanaian dancehall icon Stonebwoy, and Grammy-nominated singer Tems, all of whom are competing for top honors in various categories.
The ‘Best Collaboration’ category is particularly competitive, featuring standout tracks like “Tshwala Bam (Remix)” and “Benin Boys” vying for the coveted award.
Fans across the globe are invited to cast their votes online, with voting now officially open on the Trace Awards website. Winners will be determined through a mix of fan votes and an expert jury’s decisions, ensuring a balanced and fair selection process.
As the countdown to the ceremony begins, the Trace Awards 2025 is poised to deliver a spectacular evening of performances and tributes to the achievements of African music. With the biggest names in the industry gathering in Zanzibar, the night promises to be an unforgettable celebration of the continent’s vibrant and dynamic music scene.
