Why Wizkid’s comment about rap was wrong – Rapper Zoro
Indigenous Nigerian rapper Owoh Chimaobi Chrismathner, known as Zoro Swagbag, has expressed his disagreement with Wizkid’s assertion that “rap is dead.”
Recall, Wizkid made this comment during an interview with 10 magazine, arguing in favor of Afrobeats dominating the industry.
In response, Zoro stated that, while he appreciated the message Wizkid was trying to convey, he believed the way it was presented was wrong. Zoro noted that Wizkid’s comment about rap being dead due to artists using similar beats and styles received backlash from Nigerian rap artists, some of whom responded online or released diss tracks.
During an interview with Tacha on Cool FM Nigeria, Zoro highlighted that Wizkid’s disclaimer, stating he wasn’t referring to Nigerian rappers, didn’t change anything because, in Zoro’s view, rappers share similarities regardless of their nationality.
Tacha asked, “What’s your opinion on what Wizkid said about rap being dead? Do you personally think that rap is dead?”
Zoro responded, “I do not think so. But I kind of like the idea of what he was trying to say. The way he said it was wrong.
“He said we quoted him out of context that he wasn’t talking about Nigerian rappers. But I mean, if you’re talking about rappers, rappers are the same everywhere.
“Of course, rap is not dead. It’s just that we took too long to be able to start making rap as enjoyable as we are making it right now. As the likes of Odumodublvck is doing and Falz has already been doing.”
