Man City to face the music! Premier League agree date for ‘trial of the century’ over 115 FFP breaches – with huge points deduction still on the table.
The trial over Manchester City’s alleged breaches of 115 Financial Fair Play rules has been scheduled for late autumn 2024. The allegations emerged earlier this year following a five-year investigation into potential financial regulation violations spanning 14 seasons from the start of the 2009–2010 campaign.
City is accused of various breaches, including falsified financial reporting and noncompliance with the Premier League’s probe. The trial date comes after months of relative quiet on the matter, with both the Premier League and Manchester City maintaining a low profile.
The hearing is expected to address the allegations against City, who have consistently refuted any wrongdoing. Manager Pep Guardiola recently expressed his commitment to staying at the Etihad Stadium, even if the accusations were proven true.
The trial’s timing coincides with heightened scrutiny on financial matters in football, notably illustrated by Everton’s 10-point deduction for breaching the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules. The resolution of City’s case might extend into the summer of 2025, with potential delays and appeals contributing to a prolonged process.
